The commencement of operations by DP World at the Tartous port marks a significant milestone for logistical advancements in Syria. Following the official handover from the Syrian General Authority for Land and Sea Ports, the company welcomed its new tugboat, named Al-Fath, into service. This development is poised to reshape the maritime landscape in the region, as DP World focuses on enhancing efficiency and connectivity at one of Syria’s vital trade hubs.
Expanding Maritime Capacity
DP World has announced that its operations at Tartous are part of a long-term concession agreement spanning 30 years. This agreement includes planned investments amounting to approximately three billion dirhams, representing one of the largest foreign investments in Syria’s logistics sector in recent years. The initiative aims to support the country’s economic recovery by transforming Tartous into a high-efficiency commercial and logistical center.
Advanced Tugboat Enhancements
The recently inducted tugboat, Al-Fath, measures 22 meters in length and is equipped with a pulling capacity of up to 50 tons, along with certified fire extinguishing water cannons. Tugboats play a critical role in guiding large vessels within confined spaces and are vital for safe maritime operations, reducing waiting times, and enhancing overall safety in the port.
Infrastructure Assessment and Improvements
Currently, DP World is conducting a comprehensive assessment of the port’s infrastructure, which encompasses equipment readiness, dock facilities, and warehouse capabilities. This initial phase includes technical surveys, operational studies, and design planning to establish a detailed roadmap for redevelopment. In the short term, efforts will focus on deepening access channels, docks, and piers to achieve optimal design depths.
Digital Transformation and Training Initiatives
Additionally, DP World aims to implement its advanced digital platforms to boost operational efficiency and transparency. As part of this initiative, employee training programs and process improvements will be introduced simultaneously to elevate productivity and minimize ship waiting times to align with global standards. Fadh Al-Banna, CEO of DP World Tartous, emphasized, “We have embarked on the journey to transform Tartous port into a world-class maritime gateway, and through close collaboration with the Syrian government and the authority, we are committed to leveraging our global expertise to build a modern, digitally advanced port that enhances trade activities and reinforces Tartous’s position as a key commercial hub in the Eastern Mediterranean.”
With the launch of operations by DP World in Tartous, Syria is set to witness a new era of logistical capabilities and improved maritime services, ultimately fostering economic growth and expanding its role within the global trade network.
