Dhofar Unveils Innovative Camel Milk Cheese Production Facility

Oman is poised to make significant strides in the dairy sector with the launch of its first camel milk cheese factory in the Wilayat of Rakhyut, located in the Governorate of Dhofar. This initiative is not only a landmark development for the country’s dairy industry but also aims to empower rural women and bolster economic growth. The introduction of camel milk cheese production in Dhofar represents a new chapter for local artisans and producers committed to enhancing the value chain within the region.

Supporting Economic Development

The establishment of the camel milk cheese factory is designed to foster economic development in Dhofar, specifically targeting local communities. This initiative seeks to empower rural women, creating opportunities for them to engage effectively in the food production sector. By implementing this project, Oman aims to revitalize local economies and strengthen the traditional dairy industry through innovative practices.

Collaboration with the FAO

The project will be executed in collaboration with the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), ensuring adherence to global standards and practices in cheese production. Funding for the venture comes from the Al Jisr charity foundation, showcasing a strong partnership between governmental and non-governmental organizations striving for local advancement. This collaboration underscores the importance of sustainable practices in camel cheese production within Oman.

Factory Operations and Product Range

Scheduled to commence operations in the first quarter of 2026, the camel milk cheese factory is projected to process between 500 liters to two tons of camel milk daily. There are ambitious plans for gradual expansion, aiming to reach five tons by the conclusion of the first operational year and potentially exceeding 15 tons thereafter. The factory will produce a diverse range of products, including fresh and semi-hard cheeses, with future plans for hard cheese, condensed milk, ice cream, and various milk desserts.

Empowering Local Women

This initiative will empower 20 rural women from the Omani Women’s Association in the Wilayat of Rakhyut. It aims to enhance their roles within the local food production landscape, assisting them in developing effective production and marketing strategies for camel-based products. The women involved will undergo extensive capacity-building programs, including workshops focused on quality standards, food safety, finance, marketing, and small business management.

The contract signing ceremony was attended by Dr. Ahmed Nasser Al Bakri, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources for Agriculture, symbolizing official support for this meaningful project. Dhofar Governorate, recognized as a crucial habitat for camels in Oman, boasts an impressive camel population of approximately 177,821 as of 2023. This demographic reality positions Dhofar as a vital hub for the camel dairy industry, making the emergence of camel milk cheese an opportune development for local economies and food culture.
