In a remarkable medical achievement, the Burjeel Institute of Organ Transplantation at Burjeel Medical City in Abu Dhabi successfully restored hope to a 68-year-old patient, Thangavilo Chandran Mohan, through a complex liver transplant. This procedure has not only given him a new lease on life but has also rekindled his hopes after suffering from end-stage liver disease (cirrhosis) that posed a severe threat to his wellbeing.
Overcoming Health Challenges
Chandran Mohan’s journey began with a diagnosis of liver cirrhosis in 2011. Despite his efforts to manage the illness with regular medical care, his health continued to deteriorate over the years. What started as metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) progressed into end-stage liver disease, accompanied by debilitating complications that left him exhausted even during simple activities such as walking.
Following a significant decline in his health in the months leading up to the surgery, a liver transplant emerged as the only viable treatment option. “I have now entered what I describe as the second phase of my life following the liver transplant,” said Chandran Mohan, reflecting on his newfound vitality post-surgery.
A Smooth Recovery Process
Dr. Parthi Srinivasan, who oversaw the transplant, reported that the recovery of the patient proceeded without complications. After spending five days in the intensive care unit, Chandran Mohan was transferred to a regular ward where he began his physical therapy. Just ten days post-surgery, he was discharged and able to return home, marking a swift recovery.
Dr. Amina Mohamed Ibrahim Hamdan Al-Hinai, a consultant gastroenterologist and liver specialist, elaborated on the meticulous preparations undertaken for the surgery. “We ensured the availability of blood products, including platelets and whole blood, to handle any emergencies that might arise during and post-surgery. Thankfully, the operation proceeded seamlessly,” she stated.
