The Role of Gold and Gypsum in Enhancing Communication

In a remarkable fusion of art and humanity, the project “نَبْرة” transforms gypsum and gold into artistic mediums that communicate through sign language. This initiative aims to highlight the importance of integrating the deaf and hard of hearing into the fabric of society, emphasizing their invaluable presence and contributions.

A Visual Dialogue

The project features sculptures that embody the shapes of hands crafted from warm white gypsum, representing the letters of sign language. Dangling from these hands are exquisite necklaces adorned with diamonds, creating a captivating sparkle. Through this artistic endeavor, “نَبْرة” offers a sensory experience that captures the essence of communication, turning the echoes of voices into a vibrant sense of meaning and beauty. It invites viewers to explore the language of hands and the unspoken sounds it conceals.

Community-Centric Vision

Nora Mohammed Al-Jama’a, from the “Masir Collective,” which launched the project during the 11th edition of Dubai Design Week, shared insights on the initiative. She explained, “We initiated the foundation and the project within Design Week, aiming to merge design with community aspects and provide a holistic experience that encompasses sensory, visual, and human elements.” She further elaborated on “نَبْرة,” stating, “The project comprises a series of necklaces designed in collaboration with Eyon Jewelry, celebrating sign language, alongside a collection of sculptures that present the letters in a unique installation style.”

Artistic Collaborations

In addition to the stunning necklaces, Al-Jama’a highlighted the collaboration with “House of Clay” for designing the sculptures, allowing for direct engagement with visitors. Representatives from the deaf and hard of hearing community participated daily, creating live interactions that educate attendees on the basics of sign language and reinforce community integration. Emirati jewelry designer Ruwa Ahmed spoke about her collection, emphasizing the depth of human connection behind each piece. “Our designs reflect the essence of individuals and their identities. These necklaces carry a profound human dimension, motivating our collaboration in this project,” she shared.

Embodying Communication through Art

Artist Mudar Al-Suwaidi from “House of Clay” discussed her role in creating the sculptures, saying, “We typically work with clay, but we chose gypsum for this project to highlight sign language. The designs are infused with emotions, reminding us that communication goes beyond words; expression can be conveyed through hands.” She noted that ensuring the accuracy and clarity of the sign letters was paramount to prevent misunderstandings. This project serves as a reminder that everyone can communicate in diverse ways that deserve acceptance and respect.

Social Impact and Future Aspirations

Al-Jama’a considers “نَبْرة” primarily a community project that underscores the needs of individuals with disabilities, especially the deaf and hard of hearing, striving for their inclusion in society. This aligns perfectly with the declaration of 2025 as the “Year of Society” and the celebration of the Arab deaf community’s golden jubilee. The project’s launch at such a prominent artistic event aims to create solutions that enhance communication among various community groups, fostering the integration of roles.

Ruwa Ahmed remarked on their design features, stating, “We incorporated finger movements within small circles adorned with diamonds, while the bases are crafted from gemstones like lapis lazuli and mother-of-pearl.” Meanwhile, Al-Suwaidi emphasized that these designs carry sentiments that affirm that communication transcends spoken words, allowing for expression through hands.

Through “نَبْرة,” the collaboration among three Emirati women transcends mere artistic endeavor, culminating in a noble societal cause that celebrates differences while promoting inclusivity.
