In a remarkable feat that challenges the limitations often set by technology, Emirati citizen Ahmed Hassan Al Shahi has successfully transformed what artificial intelligence deemed “impossible” into a world record acknowledged by Guinness World Records. By raising the largest flagpole for the UAE on a vehicle, measuring 30 meters in length and reaching a height of 15 meters, Al Shahi navigated significant logistical and technical hurdles to accomplish this extraordinary achievement.
The Inspiration Behind the Record
Ahmed Al Shahi shared that the idea emerged alongside the “Proud of the UAE” initiative launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. This initiative aims to bolster national pride and a sense of belonging. Al Shahi explained that the goal extended beyond merely setting a record; it was about delivering a message that expresses love for the UAE in an unconventional manner.
“During the crises faced by the region, we felt that we needed to express our love for the UAE in a unique way,” he said. “The idea of raising a massive flag vertically on a pole fixed to a vehicle came to mind as a symbol of pride and loyalty to our nation and its leadership.”
Overcoming Challenges with Unwavering Determination
The concept was initially discussed in a gathering of friends, including Yahya Said Loutah and Naser Loutah, who shared Al Shahi’s enthusiasm for the project. After conceptualizing the idea, the team entered the planning, design, and preparation stages for its implementation. During the planning phase, they utilized AI tools to analyze the dimensions of the flag and flagpole and assess the project’s feasibility. However, the AI’s analysis indicated that the possibility of executing the idea was low due to the flag’s enormous size and the associated technical challenges.
“We inputted the measurements of the flag and the pole into AI programs for project evaluation, and the results warned that the vehicle could not bear the expected loads and might tip over,” he recalled. “Despite these predictions, we pressed on and continued our experiments until we realized the concept.”
Following six days of intense work starting from April 13, the idea became a reality, demonstrating that the UAE’s spirit teaches us that nothing is impossible when backed by determination and hard work.
The Historic Record Attempt
As rumors spread and the video of the attempt gained traction on social media, there were skeptics who believed the visuals were fabricated using AI or special effects due to the enormity of the flag and the manner in which it was raised. To counter this skepticism, the team showcased original recordings documenting every phase of the execution, verifying the project’s authenticity.
The record, set in Dubai on April 23, was officially recognized by Guinness World Records on June 5, after the organization requested original footage and technical documentation. Al Shahi emphasized that his proudest moment transcended the record itself; it was the overwhelming positive reaction from citizens and residents that filled him with pride. “I felt immense pride when I saw the reactions from the people, and the deep sense of gratitude they expressed towards the flag and the UAE. This interaction meant more to me than any record.”
Recognizing Support and Future Aspirations
Al Shahi’s latest achievement marks the ninth record he has accrued with Guinness World Records, with the previous eight being associated with skydiving and sports performance. He attributes his success to the unwavering support for local talents in the UAE. “His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Minister of Defense, has been a tremendous source of inspiration and support throughout my athletic journey,” he shared.
Al Shahi dedicated this latest record to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, emphasizing that this milestone is a testament of loyalty and love for the UAE, its leadership, and its people.
