Celebrating Emirati Women’s Achievements at Zayed National Museum

In celebration of Emirati Women’s Day, the Zayed National Museum has launched the “Women of the Nation” tour, which commenced on 1 August and will continue until 26 September. This initiative aims to highlight the achievements and contributions of women in shaping the UAE’s society across generations.

Exploring Women’s Contributions Through History

The tour takes visitors on a journey through five of the museum’s permanent exhibition halls: “Our Beginnings,” “To Our Ancestors,” “Within Our Links,” “On Our Shores,” and “From Our Roots.” Each hall showcases the vital role women have played in the region’s history, from ancient times to the present day. The narrative reflects their leadership, support of communities, preservation of cultural heritage, and the transmission of knowledge through the ages.

Honouring Influential Figures

During the tour, guests will learn about the profound influence of the late Sheikha Salama bint Butti Al Qubaisi. Her wisdom and values significantly shaped the upbringing of her son, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may he rest in peace. Additionally, the efforts of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, known as the “Mother of the Nation,” are also highlighted. As the President of the General Women’s Union, the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and the Federal Family Development Foundation, she has made remarkable contributions to women’s empowerment and the enhancement of educational and community development in the UAE.

A Historical Perspective on Women’s Status

The exhibit further showcases historical evidence of women’s status in the region throughout the ages. This includes the story of a woman buried on Marawah Island over 8,000 years ago, along with coins from the Abiel period (from 300 BC to 100 AD) that suggest there were female rulers in the area during that time.

Cultural Contributions of Women

Alongside celebrating these notable figures, the tour also acknowledges the everyday contributions of women within coastal and inland communities. These contributions include involvement in the pearl economy, weaving traditional houses, preparing meals and medicines, and preserving the rich cultural traditions of the UAE.
