In a move aimed at unifying ranks in Syria, former leader of the “Jaish al-Islam” faction, Issam Bouidani, called for “raising the beacons of unity in the Levant and uniting efforts to rebuild Syria.” This call came after his release by the Emirati authorities, just one day after President Ahmed al-Shara’s visit to Abu Dhabi. These events mark a significant milestone in the journey of reconstruction and national reconciliation in the country.
Bouidani’s Return to Damascus
Upon his arrival in Damascus, Issam Bouidani was welcomed by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, along with several ministers and officials, receiving both official and popular support from the residents of his area. Bouidani expressed his gratitude to the people of his city, emphasizing the importance of uniting efforts to develop the country. President al-Shara also announced his intention to advance reconstruction efforts in the Ghouta region, reflecting the Syrian government’s commitment to economic and social improvements.
Crowds Gather to Accompany Him
According to local reports, a family delegation including Mahmoud, Issam Bouidani’s brother, headed to the People’s Palace in Damascus to meet him upon his arrival. Additionally, residents gathered in “Freedom Square” in Douma, Bouidani’s hometown, in preparation for his reception. This warm welcome indicates the significant public support Bouidani enjoys and his role as a leader during this transitional period.
President al-Shara’s Visit to the UAE
These events follow President al-Shara’s visit to the UAE, where he met with his Emirati counterpart, Mohammed bin Zayed. The discussions focused on security conditions and regional challenges, as well as enhancing economic partnerships. President al-Shara expressed Syria’s solidarity with the UAE, rejecting any actions that might affect its sovereignty and security, especially in light of recent Iranian aggressions.
Bouidani’s Role in the Struggle Against the Regime
Issam Bouidani is considered one of the prominent leaders of the Syrian revolutionary factions who managed to enter the capital, Damascus, in late 2024, contributing to the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Bouidani was arrested at Dubai International Airport in April 2025 while attempting to leave the country after a short visit. He has led the “Jaish al-Islam” faction since 2015, following the death of its founder, Zahran Alloush, in a Russian airstrike. “Jaish al-Islam” is one of the leading factions that led fierce battles against the former regime and had a significant presence in Eastern Ghouta before its withdrawal in 2018.
After the regime’s downfall, Bouidani and the rest of the faction were integrated into the Syrian Ministry of Defense, where he has held a leadership position since December 2025, highlighting his ongoing role in the reconstruction of Syria.
