In a remarkable fusion of passion and personal space, Arun Rajagopal, a Dubai resident, has transformed his apartment into a luxurious homage to aviation. This travel aficionado and ardent admirer of the Airbus A380 has ingeniously recreated “The Residence”, the opulent three-room suite available on Etihad Airways flights, right within his home. Upon entering his abode, one is greeted by an ivory-hued door, leather sofas, and elegantly arched ceilings, bathed in natural sunlight from open windows. For a fleeting moment, it feels as if one has boarded a plane rather than stepping into an apartment.
A Lifelong Enthusiasm for Aviation
Arun’s obsession with aviation isn’t a recent development; it stems from his childhood fascination with various forms of transport. Growing up in the coastal city of Kochi in India, he was captivated by trains, buses, and cargo ships. His mother nurtured this curiosity by frequently sending him on extended train journeys across India accompanied by older relatives. He recalls early flying experiences, primarily on domestic flights, before his family relocated to Oman when he was nine years old. Unfortunately, due to financial difficulties, his travels were curtailed for 13 years, but his passion reignited when he started his career in digital content creation.
Aviation’s Grandeur: The A380
It was the Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger aircraft, that truly captured Arun’s imagination. He has flown on this aircraft model 220 times, covering approximately 715,000 miles across six continents, with plans for even more journeys. His journey into the first-class section of the A380, known for its luxury, began with an underwhelming experience on his initial flight in March 2009. However, a turning point came during his fourth trip to Singapore, which opened his eyes to a new level of comfort and luxury.
Transforming Passion into Reality
Today, his single-bedroom apartment in Dubai resembles a private aviation museum filled with memorabilia and authentic components sourced from A380 aircraft. Arun is an avid collector, having filled his two homes in Dubai and a third in Kochi with carefully selected items, including two first-class seats from the inaugural A380 flight of Emirates, alongside various flight-related memorabilia. He has even participated in 45 inaugural flights of the A380 and has spent nearly 60 days of his life aboard these double-decker giants.
The A380 Cabin in His Home
One of his prized possessions is a meticulously integrated cabin from the A380, replete with modern amenities: a custom 32-inch television, remote-controlled window blinds, USB outlets, and a lighting system, all designed to maintain privacy. The cabin installation was no small feat; it required nearly a year of reconstruction and renovation to fit his living space. Arun chose to repurpose a wing wheel into a coffee table, blending aesthetics with functionality.
Crafting a Unique Space
While initially focused on acquiring just two seats that comprise the ‘Poltrona Frau’ leather sofa, fate led him to purchase the entire cabin instead. Fawaz Mohammed Ali, founder of the Emirati aircraft recycling company “Wings Craft,” proposed a more ambitious project that Arun couldn’t resist. “Fawaz was incredibly passionate and had a clear vision. He said, ‘It’s better to take the entire cabin. We’ll make it look fabulous for you’,” Arun recounts.
The Financial Commitment
Although Arun refrains from disclosing the precise cost of his lavish cabin conversion, he likens the investment to that of a car. As an Indian passport holder, he faces numerous travel hurdles compared to those with more powerful passports. “I did not grow up in a privileged environment. For me, the Airbus A380 has become a symbol of ambition and the power of dreams,” he reflected. “This journey has a far deeper significance than merely reaching a destination.” Today, Arun’s home stands as a testament to his unwavering passion for aviation, seamlessly blending opulence with his enduring love for flight.
