Asian Sells 3.6 Million Dirhams in Watches to Con Artist

An Asian Man Hands Over Two Watches Worth 3.6 Million Dirhams to a Fraudster Without Receiving Anything in Return

A captivating incident occurred in Dubai when an Asian national handed over two luxury Patek Philippe watches, valued at 3.6 million dirhams, to a fraudster without receiving anything in return. This incident highlights how deception can lead to significant financial losses, showcasing a dark side of scams that individuals may face. In this article, we explore the details of the incident and the subsequent investigations.

Details of the Incident

The victim, who manages a group of businesses, met a European individual who deceived him into believing he was an executive at an investment company in Dubai. The fraudster presented a business license and asserted his strong financial capabilities, which led the victim to agree to sell him the two valuable watches. After a complete purchase contract was drawn up, the victim did not realize he was handing over the watches without any guarantee or actual payment.

Developments Regarding Financial Transfers

When the fraudster delayed payment of the agreed amount, the victim reached out via WhatsApp. Instead of responding, the fraudster provided excuses and claimed he had sold the watches to a prominent figure, asking the victim to issue invoices in that person’s name. The situation worsened when the fraudster sent fake images of large financial transfers, further boosting the victim’s confidence until he later discovered that no transfers had occurred in his account.

Seeking Justice

Feeling anxious and suspicious, the victim decided to visit the company’s office to inquire about the fraudster. However, the biggest surprise came when he discovered that the fraudster did not exist. Consequently, the victim filed a criminal complaint against the fraudster for fraud and forgery, leading to the fraudster’s conviction and a three-year prison sentence.

Legal Outcomes

After the criminal ruling, the victim proceeded to civil court, seeking to recover the value of the watches, estimated at 3.6 million dirhams. However, the fraudster did not appear in court, complicating the case further. After reviewing the evidence and testimonies, the court confirmed that there was insufficient proof to support the victim’s claim regarding the fraudster receiving the watches, resulting in the dismissal of the case.

This story underscores the importance of caution and diligence in financial transactions, particularly when dealing with strangers or untrustworthy individuals. Although the victim followed all basic procedures, the lack of caution had dire consequences. This incident serves as a lesson on the necessity of thoroughly vetting matters before undertaking significant financial steps.
