Emirati Cuisine Redefines Dining Experience at Sikka

Emirati Dishes with an Artistic Flavor at “Sikka”

Emirati dishes with an artistic flavor provide a unique experience at the Sikka Art and Design Festival, where the Culinary Arts House takes visitors on a journey through the history and rich culture of Emirati food. Under the slogan “With and Among Our Food,” 12 chefs are collaborating to create dishes that reflect the temporal and spatial transformations these meals have undergone, making the Sikka Festival an unforgettable event for food and art enthusiasts.

Exploring the Evolution of Emirati Cuisine

The Culinary Arts House aims to highlight the evolution of Emirati food as part of a vibrant cultural context. According to curator Nora Al-Falahi, the dishes represent a part of national identity and reflect the various environments in the Emirates, from desert to coastal. She added, “We explored the impact of trade and cultural exchange on the diversity of dishes and how the younger generation is joining this dialogue by incorporating new flavors.”

The dishes showcased by the participating chefs are characterized by rich diversity, drawing inspiration from traditional foods and local ingredients. Among the participants are Huda Al-Ghafli, Hatem Matar, and many others, each offering a unique dining experience that reflects regional differences.

A Unique Dining Experience

The experience is designed to be intimate and engaging, with round tables reminiscent of the ancient narratives used for serving food. Sheikha Al-Taniji added her artistic touch by planting local trees, such as the Ghaf tree, in the center of the tables, reflecting cultural exchange and the richness of the Emirati environment. Thus, Emirati dishes with an artistic flavor are complemented by an artistic touch that enhances communication opportunities during dinner.

The Interaction of Flavors and Heritage

On the opening day of the Sikka Festival, Chef Abdulrahman Lootah presented an innovative dining experience aimed at correcting some misconceptions about Emirati dishes. Lootah stated, “Emirati dishes are characterized by their unique flavors, yet many people are unaware of important details about them.” To illustrate this, he presented dishes that combine local ingredients with global flavors, such as “Majboos Risotto” and “Hasso Matar Shawarma Sandwich.”

Lootah also noted that the coordination of flavors has added a new and innovative character to traditional dishes, allowing chefs the opportunity to “think outside the box” and be part of a rich cultural experience.

Art Serving Flavor

The event enhances the artistic aspects through an exhibition featuring paintings and installations that convey messages about flavors. Among the participants is Khawla Al-Raisi, who showcased a digital work documenting the transformations in family dining in the UAE. Artist Alia Al-Shamsi added an artistic touch with oil paintings representing the evolution of food through a single dish that embodies elements inspired by multiple cultures.

Additionally, the experience was conveyed through beautifully crafted wooden seating made in Dubai’s oldest carpentry workshop. Archival videos documenting the culture associated with food since the 1960s were also shared.

Emirati dishes with an artistic flavor represent a dreamy experience that embodies rich traditions infused with innovation and diversity, making the visitors of the Sikka Festival loyal witnesses to the convergence of the past and future in every bite.
