In a significant declaration underscoring the United Arab Emirates’ commitment to environmental welfare, Dr. Amina bint Abdullah Al-Dhahak, the Minister of Climate Change and Environment, affirmed the nation’s dedication to fostering collaborative efforts among stakeholders to enhance air quality. This statement coincides with the celebration of the “International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies,” highlighting the critical message that clean air is not merely an environmental goal but a crucial investment in community well-being, stronger economies, and shared prosperity.
Connecting Air Quality and Economic Resilience
Dr. Al-Dhahak emphasised the strong correlation between air pollution causes and climate change, noting that integrated efforts present a vital opportunity to achieve widespread benefits across climate action and sustainable development. “Improving air quality is a strategic national priority in the UAE,” she said, pointing to the “National Agenda for Air Quality 2031.” This agenda provides a clear framework for aligning the initiatives of both federal and local governments as well as the private sector.
A Comprehensive Approach to Air Quality Management
The agenda outlines three main pillars: monitoring, mitigation, and management, with the goal of promoting community well-being. It encompasses both outdoor and indoor air quality, along with managing surrounding noise and odours, supported by a robust system of federal environmental legislation and regulatory requirements designed to prevent and manage emissions efficiently.
Data-Driven Initiatives for Effective Policies
Dr. Al-Dhahak further pointed out that translating these policies into measurable actions necessitates reliable, accessible, and integrated data. The “National Air Quality Platform” in the UAE offers real-time insights into air quality across the nation. To enhance this effort, the Ministry has activated a central digital dashboard to collect and manage monitoring data from local environmental agencies, replacing isolated reporting systems with a unified national digital workflow. This promotes data quality assurance and facilitates national reporting, thereby enhancing integration and collaboration at both federal and local levels.
Advancing Emission Measurement and Reporting
She also noted the completion of the national system for measuring, reporting, and verifying (MRV) emissions, which incorporates priority air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions into a unified digital path. This initiative provides a reliable database to accurately identify emission sources, track performance, and direct mitigation efforts towards areas that will yield the most significant impact in enhancing climate action.
Proactive Approaches to Air Quality Forecasting
The Minister highlighted ongoing efforts to develop national capabilities for air quality forecasting and early warning systems. By integrating monitoring data with meteorological information and analytical tools, the UAE is enhancing its ability to move from simply observing current conditions to predicting potential pollution events. This proactive approach allows for quicker and more precise actions, aligned with the development of more comprehensive emission inventories and scientific assessments of pollution sources as a pivotal element of building a robust system to meet future challenges.
A Vision for Sustainable Air Quality
In her concluding remarks, Dr. Al-Dhahak reinforced that these collective initiatives represent a major transition from fragmented monitoring towards a comprehensive national system that includes the measurement, understanding, and management of air quality while anticipating related risks. “Clean air is fundamental to quality of life and supports a resilient, competitive economy,” she stressed, assuring that the UAE will continue to collaborate with federal and local entities, the private sector, academia, and international partners to accelerate the development of practical solutions that contribute to cleaner air for current and future generations.
