As the new academic year commences, the Department of Municipalities and Transport has announced the reopening of the overhead interchange linking Khalifa City to Zayed City over the E20 road. This significant infrastructure enhancement aims to improve traffic flow and accessibility, particularly as families are gearing up for the school season.
Enhancements to the E20 Route
The reopened interchange will introduce two additional lanes, expanding the total to five lanes in each direction. This development is part of a broader initiative to accommodate increasing traffic demands and facilitate smoother commutes for road users traveling to and from Abu Dhabi.
Future Expansions on the Horizon
Most of the western section of the project is nearing completion, with plans to unveil a new interchange and additional lanes along the eastern segment of the E20 by the first quarter of 2027. The overarching project aims to bolster the road’s capacity by increasing the number of lanes from three to five in each direction, alongside the construction of two new bridges and the addition of 10.5 kilometres of ramps and new traffic loops.
Improving Road Safety in Khalifa City
This initiative will also enhance safety standards within Khalifa City and its surrounding areas, incorporating 1.5 kilometres of internal roads and eight intersections equipped with traffic signals. These improvements are critical for ensuring safe and efficient travel for residents and visitors alike.
As developments unfold, this crucial infrastructure project is set to significantly boost connectivity and enhance the daily commuting experience for those in the region.
