The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi has unveiled an advanced digital observatory as part of the “Mangrove Initiative – Abu Dhabi,” designed to monitor, coordinate, and support the efforts for the rehabilitation of mangrove trees across the emirate. Currently, the observatory tracks over 18.5 million planted mangrove trees in restoration sites.
Achievements and Growth Metrics
This observatory, developed with funding from Dolphin Energy as part of their five-year commitment, has recorded growth exceeding 10.4 million trees, boasting a success rate of 46.94% in rehabilitation efforts across more than 1,775 hectares of restored habitat.
Comprehensive Data Collection
The digital observatory stands out for its high capacity to compile rehabilitation data from 19 ongoing projects, integrating the efforts of a diverse range of partners throughout Abu Dhabi into a unified digital system. It provides up-to-date and accurate indicators regarding the progress of rehabilitation projects, growth rates, and project performance, relying on field surveys, satellite imagery, and comprehensive data from strategic partners.
Scientific Basis for Environmental Planning
Designed to support scientifically grounded planning for ecosystem rehabilitation and long-term recovery, the observatory enables the agency and its partners to track ongoing projects, enhance monitoring efforts, identify coverage gaps, and coordinate rehabilitation areas among stakeholders. This also involves verifying and approving project sites to ensure activities do not adversely impact existing natural habitats.

Acting Executive Director for the Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity Sector at the agency, Maitha Mohammed Al Hameli, emphasised that the effectiveness of mangrove rehabilitation initiatives increases when based on scientific references and executed through coordinated efforts among various parties, supported by systematic long-term monitoring.

Al Hameli noted that the observatory not only compiles extensive environmental data into a comprehensive platform but also enhances decision-making processes and elevates accountability, ultimately contributing directly to achieving sustainability goals with measurable environmental impact. Moreover, she stated that success in mangrove rehabilitation is no longer solely measured by the number of trees planted but should extend to evaluating ecosystem restoration, habitat flourishing, and long-term environmental effects. The observatory thus provides a precise scientific foundation for planning and management by merging field data, satellite imagery, and partner reports.
