The recent collaboration between the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development and the government of Mauritania marks a significant advancement in addressing water security in the region. In the presence of the President of Mauritania, the fund is financing a pivotal project aimed at enhancing water security in the city of Kiffa and its surrounding areas. This initiative, reflecting both the urgency and importance of sustainable water solutions, is set to dramatically improve access to potable water for thousands of residents in Mauritania’s regions of Lassaba and Guidimaka.
A Major Step for Water Security
The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development is spearheading a crucial initiative to provide Kiffa and neighboring regions in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania with clean drinking water. This project is not only one of the largest interventions aimed at enhancing water security but also addresses the increasing demand for potable water in Lassaba and Guidimaka. The groundbreaking ceremony for this strategic project took place in Touimiret Eflane, just south of Kiffa, in the presence of President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.
Project Highlights
The initiative focuses on transporting water from the Senegal River to supply dozens of towns and villages with drinkable water. With an investment exceeding 300 million USD, this project is poised to become a cornerstone of water supply efforts in Mauritania. Upon completion, it will provide drinking water to over 180,000 residents immediately, with the potential to expand services to 500,000 beneficiaries by 2050.
The project also incorporates the establishment of production and treatment facilities with a capacity of 50,000 cubic meters per day, which can be scaled up as needed. Additionally, a sophisticated network of over 780 kilometers of pipelines will be developed to ensure effective delivery to urban and rural areas along the project route.
Long-term Vision and Sustainability
Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, the General Director of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, emphasized that the project to supply Kiffa with potable water represents a strategic response to one of the region’s most pressing challenges: water scarcity. He articulated that the fund’s investment in this endeavor contributes to sustainable solutions that enhance the quality of life and support economic and social stability in Mauritania.
Furthermore, Al Suwaidi noted, “This project embodies a model of developmental partnerships that our fund pursues to empower communities with access to essential services, ensuring a dignified standard of living.” This initiative underscores the United Arab Emirates’ longstanding commitment to supporting impactful developmental initiatives that directly affect people’s lives.
A Collaborative Effort
The execution of this project occurs in partnership with several Arab, Islamic, and international developmental funds. This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to finance and implement one of the largest water initiatives in Mauritania, reinforcing national efforts to ensure that safe water reaches various beneficiary areas.
Since the establishment of its partnership with Mauritania in 1977, the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development has successfully financed numerous vital projects across infrastructure and essential services. The fund remains dedicated to continuing its role in supporting initiatives that add value to the Mauritanian economy and contribute to the overall well-being of its community.
