A Mother’s Inspiring Journey of Hope Against Down Syndrome

At just 20 years old, Abdullah Jassim, who has Down syndrome, stands as a testament to the triumph of perseverance and the power of supportive relationships. His journey highlights not only his personal accomplishments but also the remarkable resilience of his mother, who has navigated the challenges of raising him with understanding and patience. Abdullah’s success story is a reflection of his mother’s unwavering belief in his potential, reinforcing his self-esteem and helping him overcome various obstacles along the way.

Academic Achievements and Future Aspirations

After successfully completing his secondary education, Abdullah continues to develop his skills through vocational and administrative training in preparation for entering the workforce and eventually starting a family. His academic achievements are a direct result of the support he received from his mother, his environment, and particularly his inclusive school, which provided him with opportunities to engage in various activities that have enriched his social interactions.

A Mother’s Embrace of Challenge

In an interview with “Emirates Today,” Abdullah’s mother shared that her acceptance and understanding of his condition greatly facilitated his rehabilitation journey. She welcomed the news of his Down syndrome diagnosis during her early pregnancy with a sense of assurance that he would become an extraordinary individual. Following this, Abdullah engaged in four years of physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy at Latifa Hospital, tailored to his individual capabilities and needs. She emphasised that early intervention is critical in supporting the development of individuals with special needs.

Community Support and Integration

Abdullah’s journey has also been significantly influenced by the Emirates Down Syndrome Association and the Community Development Authority in Dubai, which played a crucial role in facilitating his integration into the school system. His mother concentrated on enhancing his sensory skills throughout his education, employing repetition as a learning tool, regardless of the patience and effort it required. She praised the school for its cooperation and commitment to Abdullah’s inclusion, especially the teaching staff, who encouraged his participation in both academic and extracurricular activities, further strengthening his confidence.

Developing Social Skills and Confidence

Throughout Abdullah’s childhood, his mother prioritised cultivating his social skills, which helped him develop problem-solving abilities and better engage with others. Abdullah himself credits his achievements to his mother, who has been his primary supporter every step of the way. He is actively involved in the “Elite of Ambition” Youth Council, part of an initiative for individuals with special needs launched by the Dubai Women’s Association, a platform that allows him to voice the dreams and concerns of young people with disabilities.

Milestones in Education and Extracurricular Activities

Reflecting on his educational path, Abdullah recalled starting school at eight years old and winning an electronic competition against his mainstream peers in the second grade. He participated in a poetry recitation contest, achieving third place in his first attempt, and subsequently securing the first position in the next one, thanks to the encouragement from his principal, who helped bolster his confidence.

Passions and Future Goals

Among Abdullah’s passions is acting, which provides him with a platform to express his talents, feelings, and ideas in front of an audience. Following his secondary graduation, he is keen to enhance his technical skills, particularly in computer programs and artificial intelligence, to improve his prospects in the job market and attain independence for future family life. To pursue these ambitions, Abdullah enrolled at My Maximuss Academy, the first centre of its kind in the Gulf Cooperation Council focused on vocational and administrative training for individuals with disabilities over 18 years old. The academy aims to equip them for effective participation in the workforce.
