With the start of the new academic year, the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge has launched an initiative that allows 11th-grade students to change their academic track over a two-week period. This change includes the option to switch between the general track and the advanced track, reflecting ongoing improvements to the secondary education system. This opportunity for students will end by the 2025-2026 school year, which will mark the conclusion of the “Elite Track,” while the applied track has been revised to launch an improved version soon. This step aims to provide educational options that meet the academic interests of students, enabling them to better direct their academic futures.
Available Options for Students
The new system offers two main options: the general track and the advanced track. The general track is aimed at students interested in humanities and social sciences. The general scenario in 11th grade includes two options, where students study either chemistry and biology or physics and chemistry based on their preferences. Students who choose to study physics in 11th grade must achieve a minimum score of 75% in mathematics and physics in previous assessments.
The Advanced Track: Specialized Academic Focus
The advanced track aims to prepare students for entry into specialized fields such as medicine and engineering. It offers two study options in 11th and 12th grades. The first option focuses on studying two science subjects, while the second option allows students to study three science subjects. These options underscore the department’s commitment to providing a comprehensive educational program that supports students’ aspirations.
Flexibility in Transitioning Between Tracks
The new guidelines from the Department of Education provide significant flexibility for 11th-grade students, allowing them to change their study scenario during the first two weeks. However, 12th-grade students remain committed to their previously chosen academic system. It is worth noting that transitioning from the general track to the advanced track is not available for 11th and 12th grades, while students in grades 8 and 9 can transition under specific conditions.
University Admission Requirements
Changing tracks aligns with the university admission requirements outlined in Ministerial Decision No. (19) of 2024. Admission requirements include achieving at least 90% in mathematics and physics for entry into medicine and dentistry, while pharmacy requires an 80% score in mathematics and two science subjects. These requirements play a vital role in guiding students toward appropriate academic pathways.
Providing the opportunity for 11th-grade students to change their track within two weeks reflects the Department of Education and Knowledge’s commitment to delivering an education that meets the needs of youth and motivates them to achieve their academic ambitions. With periodic adjustments to the educational system, the department ensures that students are prepared to face future challenges.
