Scammed by a Fake Link: Young Man Loses 5000 Dirhams on a “Nuggets” Meal Deal
In an intriguing incident, a young man fell victim to an online scam after purchasing a “nuggets” meal from a fake link, costing him 5000 dirhams. This event highlights the increasing prevalence of online fraud, where scammers exploit opportunities to attract customers with enticing offers that may be mere traps. In this article, we will review the details of the case that the Abu Dhabi court ruled on, outlining the damages suffered by the victim as a result of this scam.
Case Details
The Abu Dhabi Family and Civil Administrative Court issued a ruling requiring the scammers to pay 5000 dirhams to the young man who was exploited through the fake link, in addition to 2000 dirhams in compensation for material and moral damages. The young man, who experienced this fraud, filed a lawsuit after seeing an advertisement offering a special deal from a famous restaurant for “nuggets.” After contacting the scammers, he was asked to pay 11 dirhams through a link sent to him, but it ultimately resulted in a withdrawal of 5000 dirhams from his bank account.
Conviction of the Scammers
The court confirmed the conviction of the scammers in its ruling, sentencing each to three months in prison, along with imposing a fine of 20,000 dirhams and deportation from the country. The young man requested that they be ordered to return the withdrawn funds, also filing a claim for damages incurred. The court emphasized the importance of returning unlawfully obtained money, stating in the ruling’s reasoning that “no one has the right to take another’s money without a legitimate cause.”
Compensation and Ruling Outcomes
It is worth noting that the court upheld the young man’s request for compensation, as it was established that the scammers caused him psychological and material damages. Consequently, it was indicated that he is entitled to comprehensive compensation reflecting the harm he suffered. Thus, the court ruled that the scammers must pay the plaintiff 5000 dirhams, the amount that was seized, in addition to 2000 dirhams as compensation for other damages.
This ruling serves as another example of the importance of being aware of the risks associated with online shopping, especially when it comes to offers that seem too good to be true. It underscores the necessity to exercise caution and remain vigilant about purchasing offers through untrusted links to avoid experiencing similar harm.
