Israel Withdraws Diplomats from UAE Over Security Issues

The recent orders for the return of Israeli diplomats from the UAE due to security concerns are raising eyebrows and prompting discussions about the ongoing geopolitical landscape in the region. Official reports indicate that this decision stems from heightened fears of targeted attacks against Israeli interests, illuminating the complexities surrounding Israel-UAE relations in the current climate.

On Friday morning, the official Hebrew Channel “Kan” reported that employees of Israeli diplomatic missions in the UAE “received orders to evacuate their workplaces and return to their country, amid unprecedented security tensions and warnings from the Israeli National Security Council.” The channel clarified that “the decision included an almost complete evacuation of the embassy in Abu Dhabi, including Ambassador Yossi Shalev, as well as the consulate in Dubai, amidst strict and unusual security instructions conveyed to staff from the Foreign Ministry.”

According to the Council, this follows an update to the travel warning to the UAE, where it was deemed that “armed groups are increasingly active in attempts to target Israel,” in response to the ongoing devastation in Gaza for more than 21 months and the war being waged there. The warnings come at a sensitive time, as the Council noted “the possibility of attacks against Israeli and Jewish targets in the UAE, especially during Jewish holidays and weekends.”

In this context, the Israeli National Security Council recommended “avoiding unnecessary travel to the UAE and refraining from displaying Jewish or Israeli religious or national symbols in public places.” The statement emphasized “the necessity of not frequenting Israeli or Jewish institutions in the UAE,” reflecting deep concerns about the escalation of security threats. It also highlighted “the importance of reporting any suspicious events to local authorities.”

In contrast, there was no immediate comment from Emirati authorities regarding the Hebrew media’s reports about the orders for Israeli diplomats to return for security reasons. However, the newspaper “Yedioth Ahronoth” pointed out that the UAE might be sending “indirect messages” to Israel concerning the termination of Ambassador Shalev’s duties due to his involvement in “ethical issues,” reflecting the complexities of diplomatic relations. These messages include “the ambassador being ignored and not invited to any meetings in recent times.”

Last Tuesday, Channel 12 revealed Shalev’s involvement in “ethical issues,” which sparked discontent in Abu Dhabi. Reports suggest that Shalev, who has held his position since November 2024, was previously the director-general of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office and “will soon be returned to Israel following unacceptable behavior while in a bar with Israelis.” This situation has caused a stir in diplomatic and political circles in Israel, after Emirati authorities sent a clear message to Israel through unofficial channels reflecting their unwillingness to have the ambassador present.

As complexities between the UAE and Israel increase with these orders, the security situation in the region remains a top priority, prompting both parties to reassess their diplomatic strategies in a changing context aware of the tensions.
