Dubai is enhancing its transportation system with four autonomous means of transport in a bold step towards a more sustainable and innovative future. The emirate reflects its commitment to modern technology by integrating autonomous transport into its public system, planning to launch these vehicles by 2026. These initiatives aim to achieve a strategic goal of converting 25% of transportation in Dubai to autonomous systems by 2030.
Strategic Plans for Smart Transportation
Dubai highlights four key projects that form the backbone of its vision to enhance smart transportation: autonomous vehicles, autonomous buses, autonomous abras, and air taxis. The emirate has made significant progress toward the commercial operation of these means, leveraging advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, along with strong partnerships with the private sector. This approach aims to support innovation and enhance the legislative environment to meet the demands of autonomous transport in all its forms.
Practical Trials and the Near Future
Dubai hopes to achieve the actual operation of autonomous means of transport starting in 2026. Work on several projects began in 2016 with the launch of Dubai’s Autonomous Transportation Strategy. This phase requires direct trials, with the first autonomous taxi appearing at the GITEX exhibition in 2018, followed by trial operations that included five “Cruise” vehicles in 2023, demonstrating the success of initial trials in terms of efficiency and safety.
Collaboration with Global Companies
The Roads and Transport Authority has established strategic partnerships with global companies specializing in autonomous driving. One example is the signing of an agreement with Baidu’s Apollo Go, aimed at operating 50 vehicles within field trials. Additionally, collaboration with companies like Uber Technologies and WeRide is being pursued to launch a pilot phase in preparation for autonomous transport services.
The Future of Maritime and Aerial Transport
Dubai’s vision extends beyond land transport; it also encompasses maritime transport. In 2023, the first electric autonomous abra, capable of carrying eight passengers, was launched, with local development efforts underway. The actual operation of this abra is expected to begin by 2027. Furthermore, preparations for the air taxi project are ongoing, designed to connect key areas of the city in record time, with expectations that the journey from the airport to Palm Jumeirah will take just 12 minutes.
These integrated efforts, from the development of autonomous vehicles to innovations in maritime and aerial transport, are an essential part of Dubai’s vision to achieve global leadership in advanced transport technology, ensuring a sustainable and innovative urban environment for future generations.
