Sharjah Invests in Renewable Energy for a Sustainable Future

Sharjah’s investment in renewable energy is a key focus of the emirate’s strategy to enhance environmental sustainability. Through innovative and diverse projects, Sharjah is laying a strong foundation for a future reliant on clean energy sources. The city is investing in solar and waste-to-energy technologies, effectively contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions and enhancing energy efficiency.

Major Solar Energy Projects

One of the most notable projects representing Sharjah’s investment in renewable energy is the photovoltaic solar power station located in the Sajaa gas complex. Developed in collaboration between the Sharjah National Oil Corporation (SNOC) and Emmert, this station is the largest in the emirate, producing 60 megawatts of energy. It contributes to the reduction of 66,000 tons of carbon emissions annually by relying on the direct conversion of sunlight into electricity without the use of fuel.

Solar-Powered Parking Lots

As part of its efforts to protect the environment, the Sharjah Electricity, Water, and Gas Authority launched a project for solar-powered parking lots. This project includes the installation of 240 bifacial solar panels, each with a production capacity of 530 watts, generating a total of 205,000 kilowatt-hours annually. It also provides four fast electric chargers, contributing to the development of an integrated renewable energy infrastructure in the city.

Waste-to-Energy Conversion Plant

A significant step towards better resource utilization is the establishment of the Sharjah Waste-to-Energy Plant, the first of its kind in the region. This project, implemented in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), processes 300,000 tons of waste annually to produce 30 megawatts of energy. The plant aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 450,000 tons per year.

Transforming a Landfill into a Solar Farm

Sharjah has further innovated by converting the Sajaa landfill into a solar energy production farm. Photovoltaic solar panels installed on the surface generate up to 120 megawatts of energy, reflecting Sharjah’s commitment to environmental sustainability. This project not only focuses on energy production but also aims to improve the surrounding environment and promote local agriculture.

Renewable Energy Projects from Universities

In addition to government entities, universities in Sharjah play an important role in energy sustainability through research projects. Students are developing initiatives that use solar energy to produce electricity and hot water. Among these projects is hydroponics technology that relies on solar energy to maintain the climate inside greenhouses and improve crop yields.

The Emirate of Sharjah is striving to create a sustainable environment through investments in renewable energy, focusing on modern technologies and scientific innovations. Through these projects, Sharjah affirms its determination to build a future based on clean energy and effective resource utilization.
