Vulnerable Groups at Higher Risk for Pedestrian Accidents

In the modern world, pedestrian accidents are among the most significant challenges facing our communities, with children and the elderly being the most vulnerable groups. These demographics require special attention due to their unique characteristics and needs. This article examines the reasons behind the susceptibility of children and the elderly to these accidents and explores the psychological and social repercussions that follow.

Statistics on Pedestrian Accidents

The Ras Al Khaimah police have urged drivers to avoid distractions while driving, stating that “a single moment of distraction behind the wheel can end in a tragic human incident.” Statistics from the Ministry of Interior indicate that children and the elderly are the most affected by pedestrian accidents, whether in residential areas or near schools. Last year, 29 pedestrian accidents were recorded, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals and injuries to 19 others with varying degrees of severity.

Causes of Traffic Accidents

Most of these accidents are related to negligence and lack of attention, along with speeding in residential areas and failure to give priority to pedestrians. Additionally, being distracted by a phone while driving is a primary cause of many accidents. The police emphasize the need to adhere to five essential traffic practices to mitigate risks, such as obeying speed limits and coming to a complete stop at pedestrian crossing lines.

Legal and Psychological Consequences of Pedestrian Accidents

Lawyer Moza Masoud discusses the classification of pedestrian accidents resulting in death without criminal intent as “manslaughter” under UAE Penal Law. In cases of negligence or driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, penalties can include imprisonment and fines. Masoud adds that the psychological and social motivations behind these accidents significantly impact both the perpetrators and the families of the victims.

The Importance of Road Safety Awareness

The legal official stresses the necessity of enhancing awareness campaigns to promote a traffic culture among all segments of society, as road safety is a collective responsibility. Adhering to traffic laws is not an option but a duty to ensure the safety of children and the elderly, who are the most at risk of pedestrian accidents. Creating a safe traffic environment requires a collective effort, starting with drivers and ending with pedestrians.

Enhancing awareness and adherence to the laws will play a significant role in reducing the number of pedestrian accidents and protecting lives, especially among vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly. Through positive interaction and collaboration, we can create safer communities for everyone.
