In the rapidly evolving landscape of education, officials have underscored the importance of strengthening the synergy among families, schools, and universities to enhance the educational journey of UAE students. This five-fold collaboration—comprising family, teachers, schools, communities, and policymakers—is essential for ensuring a cohesive educational experience that begins in childhood and extends into the workforce and lifelong learning.
Foundational Pillars of Learning
Dr Ahmed Sultan Al-Shaibi, Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, emphasised that the educational journey of Emirati learners hinges on three principal pillars: familial guidance and support, access to necessary information for educational and career decisions, and assistance during transitions between educational phases leading to employment.
During the session titled “The Journey of the Emirati Learner: The Fivefold Education Framework and Its Roles,” held at the UAE Education Forum 2026, Dr Al-Shaibi highlighted that the family serves as the initial source of care and guidance. This role extends beyond academic advisement within schools and universities, impacting a student’s trajectory from childhood through their professional lives. Learners require information to help them navigate choices concerning schools, curricula, university specialisations, and career paths, including job placements in the private sector or entrepreneurial ventures.
Supporting Educational Transitions
Transitioning from early education to general schooling, and then to higher education and the job market, presents significant challenges that necessitate additional support to ensure continuity in learning. The Ministry, in collaboration with its partners, is focusing on developing initiatives tailored to simplify this educational journey. One such initiative is the unified digital higher education platform, “Edu Hub,” which incorporates more than 70 higher education institutions and provides students with essential information about various specialisations and their relevance.
Dr Al-Shaibi elaborated, stating, “The platform employs technology and integrates with the Ministry of Education to electronically transfer student records from general education to their chosen university, eliminating the need for repetitive data entry and manual document submissions.” This integration has already contributed to improved admission decision rates during the recent academic year.
The Role of Higher Education Institutions
Dr Mansoor Al-Awar, President of Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University, reinforced that the National Education Charter aspires to cultivate a successful and impactful Emirati individual, capable of shaping the nation’s future by instilling national identity, personal traits, and future skills. Achieving these goals requires a harmonious collaboration among families, schools, universities, and all components of the fivefold educational framework.
He noted that the success of this synergy should not merely be quantified by the number of joint initiatives but rather by its tangible impact on the learner’s character and capabilities. Enhancing independence in thought and decision-making, coupled with a strong connection to personal identity and values, is paramount, as is readiness to learn and adapt to changes.
Adapting to Technological Transformations
The swift technological advancements and the evolution of artificial intelligence necessitate a re-evaluation of the traditional educational journey, which historically concluded with a transition from school to university and then into employment. Future professionals may find themselves altering career paths multiple times post-graduation. Thus, the role of universities should extend beyond merely awarding degrees; they must continuously support graduates and adapt to their ongoing educational and professional needs.
