The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has officially launched the “Green Airport Certificate” programme, marking the first voluntary initiative of its kind in the region aimed at accrediting environmental sustainability initiatives implemented at certified international airports in the United Arab Emirates.
Programme Overview and Goals
This programme will enable qualified airports to showcase initiatives that deliver measurable and tangible environmental benefits. The areas of focus for these initiatives include energy management, emissions control, climate action, water conservation, waste management, circular economy principles, sustainable transportation, ground operations, biodiversity preservation, pollution prevention, along with sustainable infrastructure, climate resilience, and innovation.
Commitment to Sustainability
According to Eng. Akil Ahmad Al Zarooni, the Assistant Director-General for Aviation Safety Affairs, the “Green Airport Certificate” programme demonstrates the UAE’s commitment to enhancing the sustainability of the aviation sector through practical initiatives that yield measurable results. He emphasised that the programme places the execution and documented evidence at the core of the accreditation process, enabling airports to highlight their environmental performance and translate sustainability goals into tangible outcomes. Additionally, it encourages the adoption of effective practices that surpass the minimum regulatory requirements and broadens their implementation within the aviation sector across the nation.
Incentives for Participating Airports
Awards will be given to the airports that meet the programme’s requirements, allowing them to obtain the “Green Seal”. This national emblem will reflect their commitment to sustainability and efficient environmental performance. The seal will be incorporated into the existing airport certification, thereby enhancing the status of the environmentally leading airports and stimulating the exchange of best practices and their broader application. The ultimate goal of the programme is to motivate all international airports in the UAE to progressively enhance their environmental performance, meet accreditation standards, and secure the “Green Seal”.
Alignment with National Vision
The launch of the programme exemplifies the proactive approach of the UAE in embedding sustainability within the civil aviation framework, aligning with the objectives of the “We are the UAE 2031” vision and the UAE’s strategic initiative to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. Furthermore, it embodies GCAA’s commitment to developing regulatory frameworks and innovative initiatives that promote environmental efficiency and competitiveness while supporting the adoption of best practices in national airports.
Future Prospects for Sustainable Aviation
This programme represents another significant step toward cementing the UAE’s role as a leading model in fostering a more sustainable aviation sector. By shifting from mere environmental aspirations to measurable outcomes, it encourages innovation and continuous improvement, ultimately contributing to the establishment of a safe, competitive, and sustainable civil aviation ecosystem for future generations.
