Sharjah 24 – WAM:

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah, has articulated the significant role of theatre in preserving cultural memory, enhancing identity, and fostering dialogue among diverse peoples and cultures. He highlighted the importance of theatre in drawing inspiration from human heritage and presenting it through contemporary creative lenses.

This statement was made during his attendance at a dialogue session at Al Rumaila Palace, part of the Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi Council, titled “Theatre: A Bridge Between Memory, Identity, and Cultures,” featuring renowned artist and director Lemi Ponifasio.

His Highness noted the commitment of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Fujairah, to support cultural and artistic initiatives. This effort aims to enhance global creative experiences that position Fujairah as a nurturing ground for culture, arts, and creative industries.

The session explored multiple dimensions of Ponifasio’s artistic journey in expressing cultural heritage and authentic traditions through contemporary creative interpretations. It showcased theatre’s vital role in conveying the memories of ancestors, societal narratives, and the human legacy to stages around the world.

Furthermore, it underscored theatre as a space for dialogue and cultural convergence, where the identities and collective memories of peoples are vividly depicted. The discussion also highlighted the use of performing and visual arts in presenting cultural experiences with renewed perspectives that promote human understanding and celebrate cultural and civilisational diversity.

The session reviewed Ponifasio’s effort to merge theatre, dance, opera, and visual arts through his artistic and philosophical project “MAU,” established in 1995 to explore the relationship between human beings, place, and living cultural memory. His artistic career spanned over 50 countries, participating in prestigious international arts festivals, and he holds the title of global theatre ambassador at the International Theatre Institute (ITI), as well as being recognised as a traditional leader in Samoa.

Attendees included Dr. Ahmed Hamdan Al Zeyoudi, Director of the Crown Prince’s Office, Ms. Chong Wen Chin, General Director of the International Theatre Institute (ITI), along with several cultural and artistic professionals and enthusiasts.
