The Urgent Need for Peaceful Investment Today

In a compelling address announcing her candidacy for the next United Nations Secretary-General, Lana Nusseibeh, the UAE’s Minister of State, emphasized the critical need for investment in peace, a necessity more pressing than ever in a world rife with conflict. As global tensions rise, the balance between cooperation and confrontation is tipping unfavourably. Nusseibeh asserted that the security, prosperity, and shared future of nations are contingent upon decisions that cannot be made unilaterally, highlighting that rebuilding trust is paramount for making crucial decisions within the UN framework today.

Shifting Priorities in Development Assistance

Nusseibeh remarked that developmental aid, as conceived over the past three decades, can no longer return to its previous form, cautioning that the UN will not find receptive audiences if it merely calls for more resources. Instead, she argued that the effectiveness of the organisation should be measured by the tangible results perceived by each country, not by the amount spent. She urged a re-evaluation of priorities to meet the commitments outlined in the UN Charter, which include advancing social progress and elevating living standards in a climate of greater freedoms. This requires better utilisation of expertise, partnerships, and on-the-ground presence to ensure that essential aid reaches those whose lives depend on it.

Commitment to Fair Solutions and Human Rights

Nusseibeh pledged her dedication to promoting more equitable solutions for addressing debt, creating decent job opportunities, and expanding developmental prospects in fragile environments. She also highlighted the importance of invigorating cooperation between the UN, the private sector, and charitable organisations. Regarding the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence, she noted, “It can either become a major force for equal opportunity or a primary driver of deepening divides. The choice is ours.” She expressed confidence that the UN can facilitate consensus on shared principles and expand access to this transformative technology, ensuring that the most beneficial resources do not perfectly align with those least able to access them.

Climate Change and Humanitarian Efforts

Addressing climate change, Nusseibeh acknowledged that it has become a reality in which developmental efforts operate, disproportionately burdening the poorest nations. She promised to prioritise climate concerns, focusing on disaster prevention and early response strategies. Furthermore, she affirmed her commitment to steadfastly defending human rights without double standards, stating that the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights must not be merely philosophical aspirations but binding commitments. The credibility of the UN hinges on their consistent application.

The Role of the United Nations

Nusseibeh emphasized that the UN cannot do everything; such attempts would dilute its efficacy in areas where it excels. She highlighted the need for a UN that is ambitious in its mission yet disciplined in identifying where it can make the most significant impact. This includes scaling back in areas where others can achieve results and expanding in areas only the UN can accomplish. “Member states will increase their investment in a proven UN. I am determined to demonstrate that,” she declared.

Advocating for Women and Girls in Conflict Zones

She reiterated the necessity of funding to protect women and girls in conflict areas, insisting that violence against them must not be tolerated. She highlighted the importance of documenting abuses, intensifying efforts for accountability for gender-based violence perpetrators, and enhancing support for organisations operating in conflict regions. Nusseibeh pointed out the severe challenges faced by women in conflict zones and the high costs of such suffering. She conveyed her belief that the UN still has the capacity to fulfil its essential mission.
