New Landmark for Women Unveiled Near Kalba’s Iconic Clock Tower

Sharjah 24 – Haja Khamees:

In a recent announcement that brings joy to the residents of Khor KAlba, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, revealed plans for a new tower dedicated to women. This structure will be situated near Khor KAlba University, directly across from the existing clock tower, reflecting a commitment to providing women with a designated space amidst the bustling environment.

Sheikh Dr. Al Qasimi elaborated during a telephone interview on the ‘Direct Line’ programme aired by Sharjah Radio and Television, hosted by Mohamed Hassan Khalaf, Director General of Sharjah Broadcasting Authority. He expressed that the current clock tower, which is accessible to all, was designed to cater to a mixed group, but he felt it necessary to address concerns about overcrowding. “We could not accept having men, women, and children all together in such a crowded space. Thus, we have left the clock tower for men and initiated the construction of a separate tower for women at the end of the university,” he stated.

Highlighting the thoughtful design of the new tower, Sheikh Dr. Al Qasimi noted that it will offer an unobstructed view of the surroundings, ensuring privacy for nearby residences. “The university lies to the west of the tower, while to the east are community facilities, Khor KAlba, and an extensive public garden with a large, enclosed, air-conditioned hall filled with numerous games,” he explained. He expressed enthusiasm about this garden being the first of its kind and a gift for the people of Khor KAlba, adding, “It allows women to enjoy their privacy, and the tower is currently under construction with the designs already finalised by the architect.”

Reflecting on the positive impact of new projects, the Ruler shared a nostalgic memory from his childhood, recalling the opening of Al-Eslah Al-Qasimi School in 1947. “As first-grade students, we used to hear older children sing a particular anthem, a poem presented by Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi, the Ruler at that time,” he reminisced. He highlighted the profound connection he feels to that period, listing fragments of poetry that had stuck with him over the years, particularly a 14-verse poem responding to the Omani poet Nasser bin Salem Abu Muslim Al-Bahlani.

Childhood Memories That Linger

Concluding his reflections, Sheikh Dr. Al Qasimi emphasized the indelible marks of childhood experiences on one’s memory. “I still hold a picture of myself among my classmates from first grade and recall the mats we sat on. Even the sound of pulling the mat off ourselves is etched in my mind. The details of childhood are rich and unerasable,” he remarked. He recounted the excitement that filled the air on the day of the school opening, with students crowding at the classroom door, and the warm welcome for Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr during his visit.

As new initiatives unfold, the Ruler’s efforts underscore a dedication to enhancing community spaces and preserving cherished memories, reflecting a deep-rooted connection with the culture and history of the region.
