As competition in the hospitality sector intensifies across the Gulf region, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) continues to assert its dominance as a leading tourism hub. Eli Malouf, the CEO of InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), spoke to CNN about the competitive landscape and the factors that give the UAE a distinct advantage.
Rising Competition in Tourism
The UAE’s status as a premier hospitality destination is being tested as neighboring countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Oman ramp up their own tourism sectors. The regional rivalry has undeniably intensified, prompting the UAE to strengthen its position amidst the evolving market.
IHG’s Long-Standing Presence
IHG made its debut in the UAE back in 1980 with the opening of the InterContinental Abu Dhabi. Today, the group boasts a portfolio of over 30 hotels across the country. Malouf noted that the Middle East has always been a significant market for IHG, which has been operational in the region for more than 60 years. The company’s roots can be traced back to the launch of its second-ever InterContinental hotel in Beirut, Lebanon, followed closely by its third in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Strategic Growth in the Middle East
Addressing potential growth opportunities, Malouf highlighted the promising outlook for the Middle East within IHG’s strategic plans. He stated, “It’s true that the region represents only 5% of our total rooms, but it accounts for 10% of our future projects. This means we have significant expansion on the horizon in the Middle East, far exceeding our current presence.”
As competition escalates, the UAE’s proactive approach to tourism and hospitality, combined with IHG’s commitment to growth, underscores the emirate’s resilience in maintaining its leading status in the Gulf.
