الشارقة 24:
In a bid to strengthen cultural awareness among the younger generation, the Sharjah Children’s Foundation, under the aegis of the 25-Year Foundation for Leadership and Innovation, has opened avenues for children to explore and connect with the rich Emirati heritage. Through interactive experiences, children can discover, practice, and enjoy the narratives of their cultural legacy.
Art of Weaving: Understanding Traditional Crafts
The initiative encompasses two programmes, “Al Sadu” and “Al Barza”, as part of the “Emirati House” project. Recently, around 120 children participated in the “Al Sadu” workshop, immersing themselves in this traditional art, which is a vital part of Emirati crafts. The workshop allowed them to explore materials and tools, including the sadu loom, comb, and wool threads, while learning about the various stages of weaving and decorative techniques..
Transitioning from theory to practice, the children created models inspired by the sadu art, which not only enhanced their fine motor skills but also encouraged innovation and design. This hands-on experience helped them appreciate the significance of this craft within the Emirati heritage..
Life in the UAE: A Glimpse into the Past
The “Al Barza” programme targets approximately 280 children, presenting aspects of Emirati heritage through captivating folk tales. These stories introduce young participants to elements of life in traditional Emirati society, alongside the customs, traditions, and vocabulary of the Emirati dialect..
Presented by Emirati writers Hessa Al Muhairi and Amal Al Nuaimi, the programme features a collection of “Kharafeef”, derived from the Emirati heritage. These stories highlight enduring values and traditions, instilling in children the essence of Emirati etiquette, including principles like generosity, respect, and tolerance..
These initiatives reflect the Sharjah Children’s Foundation’s commitment to promoting the presence of Emirati heritage in children’s experiences. By providing interactive opportunities, the foundation empowers children to explore the elements and values of their heritage, fostering a deep appreciation for national identity through a blend of authenticity and innovation..
