Abu Dhabi’s Business Sector Defies Odds with Economic Growth

In a revealing update from the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED), the Abu Dhabi Registration Authority (ADRA) has reported robust growth in its economic sectors during the first half of 2026. This encouraging data underscores the confidence investors have in the emirate’s economic landscape, showcasing its resilience despite various regional challenges.

Key Economic Indicators Indicate Growth

During the first six months of 2026, the total number of new economic licenses in the emirate increased by 5% compared to the same period in 2025. Renewed licenses also saw a similar uptick, with a 5% rise. Furthermore, advertisement permits surged by 14%, reflecting the vitality of the commercial activity and market movements within Abu Dhabi.

Industrial Licenses Show Strong Performance

Industrial licenses continued to thrive, with 90 licenses transitioning to the construction phase, while 61 have completed construction and moved into operational production. This progress signifies the success of initiatives aimed at attracting investments and aligns with Abu Dhabi’s industrial strategy to enhance its competitive standing in the region.

Statements from Economic Officials

Hamid Siah Al Mazrouei, Undersecretary of the Department of Economic Development – Abu Dhabi, commented on the significance of these positive indicators: “The persistent strong indicators of economic licensing activity and commercial activity in Abu Dhabi during the first half of this year are noteworthy in light of geopolitical and economic challenges. This demonstrates investors’ enduring confidence in the appeal and competitiveness of Abu Dhabi’s economy and the effectiveness of the emirate’s policies and regulatory frameworks.” He further highlighted that the reported growth was achieved compared to already elevated levels from the previous year and emphasized that the focus remains on attracting valuable investments across priority sectors.

Surge in Freelance and Creative Licenses

ADRA’s data also revealed a remarkable 224% increase in freelance licenses, showcasing a vibrant entrepreneurial spirit. The “Mubde’” licenses rose by 10%, while “Abu Dhabi Trader” licenses increased by 8% compared to the first half of 2025. This trend signifies the efficacy of support initiatives for entrepreneurship. Additionally, new craft licenses rose by 136%, and commercial licenses experienced a 4% boost.

Further Initiatives to Support Businesses

Mohammed Muneef Al Mansouri, Director General of ADRA, stated: “These positive indices in the business sector reflect the effectiveness of initiatives we have implemented in recent years to align with emerging trends and business sector needs, contributing to economic growth and diversification.” He pointed out that in the first half of this year, 11 new economic activities were introduced, along with new policies, as well as enhanced cooperation and service integration with government entities and private sector institutions aimed at facilitating the journeys of investors and entrepreneurs.

Moreover, ADRA implemented initiatives that exempted economic establishments from penalties for late license renewals for up to three months, thereby easing the burden on entrepreneurs and businesses across various sectors. Al Mansouri reiterated the commitment to maintaining a transparent and supportive business environment, facilitating seamless processes while ensuring compliance with legislative standards, regulations, consumer rights, and trademarks.
