Khalifa University Strengthens Global Partnerships in Water Initiatives

In an era where global water security is paramount, Khalifa University of Science and Technology has showcased its commitment to innovative solutions aimed at enhancing water resilience. This focus was highlighted during the university’s participation in a series of high-level meetings at the 81st United Nations General Assembly and Climate Week held in New York in 2026. These discussions underscored the pivotal role of scientific knowledge, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies in fostering sustainable water security worldwide.

Preparation for the United Nations Water Conference 2026

The university’s involvement aligns with the UAE’s preparations to host the United Nations Water Conference 2026, in partnership with the Republic of Senegal, scheduled for December 8-10. Professor Ibrahim Alhashimi, President of Khalifa University, reiterated that this conference presents a crucial opportunity for transforming innovation into tangible, sustainable solutions for water security. He emphasized the university’s contribution through its research capabilities and international partnerships, linking knowledge to practical policies to ensure water security.

Key Contributions and Discussions

Professor Shadi Hassan, Director of the Advanced Water and Membrane Technology Centre at Khalifa University, also played a significant role in these discussions. As Chair of the UNESCO Chair for Global Water Resilience and Innovation, and head of the advisory council for the “Youth for Water” initiative and the 2026 Global Water Hackathon, he participated in a consultative session titled “Developing AI-Supported Hydrology for Enhanced Water Resilience.” He highlighted the urgent need to adopt a proactive approach based on predictive analytics rather than reactive responses to water-related challenges.

Workshops and Collaborative Efforts

Moreover, Professor Hassan participated in the “Water Cycle Intelligence Coalition” workshop and a discussion panel addressing “The Relationship Between Artificial Intelligence, Water, and Energy: Innovation, Resources, and Responsibility.” These sessions explored the role of AI in water management and desalination processes, examining the energy and water resource requirements essential for its infrastructure.

In addition to these discussions, Khalifa University joined the “Academic Carnival for Water,” a national initiative overseen by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, held at the UAE’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations. Professor Hassan also co-chaired the “First Cities and Water Dialogue” at Columbia University as part of the “Urban Water Security” initiative, focusing on water supply and its reuse.

Looking Ahead

This dialogue in New York marks the inception of an international discussion series that will extend to Abu Dhabi, Naples, and Venice, with the second dialogue set to take place in Abu Dhabi in conjunction with the upcoming Water Conference. Professor Hassan concluded by stressing that innovation should be measured by its tangible impact, noting that the gathering of decision-makers in Abu Dhabi this December will be a pivotal moment to shift from dialogue and commitments to developing scalable, practical solutions for a sustainable water future.
