The UAE Sports Federation for Educational Institutions has announced the launch of the fifth edition of the UAE School Sports Championship for the academic year 2026-2027, set to commence on October 20. This initiative is backed by the Ministry of Sports, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Abu Dhabi Sports Council, Dubai Sports Council, and Sharjah Sports Council, along with national sports federations and partners such as the Ferrero Gulf Group.
The announcement also marks the beginning of the third season of the University Sports Championship, which is scheduled to kick off on October 5, 2026. This ongoing effort aims to foster a sport-centric lifestyle among students and continues to serve as a platform for discovering athletic talent across various age groups.
Sheikh Suhail bin Butti Al Maktoum, Assistant Undersecretary for the Development and Sports Competitiveness Sector at the Ministry of Sports and President of the UAE Sports Federation for Educational Institutions, stated, “The UAE school sports and university sports represent national platforms to establish sports as a lifestyle within educational environments, enhancing students’ skills across various individual and team sports. Schools and universities are the main arteries for discovering talent and feeding Emirati sports with it. In this new edition of the UAE School Sports Championship, we have expanded participation by adding wrestling and basketball, based on our belief that sports is a right guaranteed for all within our national sports framework. We have also broadened the scope of university competitions to include seven individual and team sports.”
He further noted, “We are collaborating with all our partners to develop the talent discovery system starting from school benches to dedicated sponsorship programs, utilizing the latest technologies and working with global teams under the supervision of the Ministry of Sports and its committees. This will place these talents on paths of sports excellence according to best global practices. We will continue to work with our partners to enhance both championships to elevate the national sports environment and achieve the objectives of the National Sports Strategy 2031.”
Three Phases for the UAE School Sports Championship: Registration, Qualifiers, Finals
The UAE Sports Federation elaborated that the qualifying phase for the UAE School Sports Championship will begin on October 20, following the registration period. A wide participation is expected from students across various public and private schools in the seven emirates, competing in 15 diverse sporting events with the inclusion of wrestling and basketball.
The championship will unfold in three main phases: registration, qualifiers, and finals. Qualifiers will be organized for students from Sharjah and the other northern emirates: Ajman, Umm Al-Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah. The finals will see the winners from these qualifiers compete alongside the finalists from the school championships in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, vying for the title of UAE School Sports Champion in various sports.
Specifically, the qualifiers will be spread over the three academic semesters, with details as follows: The first semester competitions will run from October 20 to November 19, 2026, followed by the second semester from January 6, 2027, to March 30, 2027. Competitions will be paused from February 4 to March 11 due to Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr. The third semester will resume from April 14 to May 10, 2027, culminating in the national finals and award ceremony on May 29, 2027.
The 15 sports included in the championship are: football, athletics, archery, badminton, laser shooting, table tennis, obstacle racing, chess, fencing, judo, jiu-jitsu, taekwondo, swimming, and, for the first time, wrestling and basketball.
195 Teams in University Sports Competing in 7 Sports
In parallel, the University Sports Championship will commence its third season for the 2026-2027 academic year on Monday, October 5, 2026, with 195 teams representing 50 universities from various government and private higher education institutions across the country, reflecting the expanding base of participation and growing interest in university sports. The finals are scheduled for April 2027.
This season will witness an expansion in individual and team competitions for both males and females over seven sports, including football, basketball, and volleyball as team sports, as well as obstacle racing, swimming, athletics, and cycling as individual sports.
The UAE Sports Federation for Educational Institutions organizes both the UAE School Sports Championship and University Sports Championship annually under the auspices of the Ministry of Sports, in collaboration with various federal and local entities, engaging schools and higher education institutions across the Emirates to enhance integration between the sports and educational sectors, thereby supporting national sports objectives.
