His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, has issued a royal decree calling for the Sharjah Consultative Council to convene for its fourth ordinary session of the eleventh legislative term. The council is set to meet on Thursday, 4 Jumada Al-Awwal 1448 AH, corresponding to 15 October 2026.
The Role of Heritage in Strengthening Community Bonds
In a recent address, the Ruler of Sharjah emphasised that preserving and reviving heritage through various cultural events is crucial for societal reform and cohesion. He highlighted the success of the Kalba Festival of Jash’a and Sahnah, and explained the significance of the term “Jash’a” and its production process. His Highness encouraged the community, particularly the youth, to uphold religious teachings, heritage, and moral values, stating, “If you love Sultan, do as I do; I race with the Imam to enter the mosque.”
Understanding Jash’a: A Cultural Perspective
During a telephone intervention on the programme ‘The Direct Line,’ His Highness elucidated the meaning of “Jash’a,” which colloquially corresponds to “Qash’a.” The term refers to dried animal hides, hence the name Jash’a is derived from its characteristic dry skin. While many believe Jash’a is made from the “Doma” fish, this is a misconception. Doma fish are used as livestock feed, mixed with dates and fermented in a specific manner.
The Production Process of Sahnah
The authentic Jash’a, often referred to as “barri,” originates from the sea, specifically the Arabian Sea. It is brought through the Gulf by the Strait of Hormuz, where it is transformed into Sahnah. This involves removing the fish’s head, tail, and belly, followed by meticulously scraping its body to eliminate the silver skin, resulting in a reddish-brown hue akin to wood. This particular shade is called “Hinta,” denoting it as one of the highest quality types of Sahnah.
Preserving Tradition and Fostering Community Spirit
His Highness expressed a commitment to reviving all forms of heritage, whether culinary or cultural, reinforcing its presence in the lives of every community member. He stated, “We love our country and gather all our sons and daughters in love for the homeland, beautifying it by establishing gardens and other delightful projects while preserving their heritage. We all belong to this nation and cherish it, eager to uphold our religion and unite on honest discourse.”
Creating an Environment for Nurturing Values
He added, “Our goal is to bring happiness to individuals, as this happiness will enable them to raise their children with values while enjoying peace of mind, free from the burdens of debt and problems. A person surrounded by troubles cannot focus on nurturing their children with patience and storytelling that imparts education and values.”
