German National Tourist Office Optimistic About Gulf Cooperation Tourism Market

In a significant boost to its connectivity with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, Munich Airport has unveiled a new dedicated passenger terminal at Terminal 1 aimed specifically at the Middle Eastern region. This development positions Munich as a key gateway to Bavaria and Germany, catering to the rising number of travellers from GCC nations.

Surge in GCC Tourist Visits to Germany

According to the German National Tourist Office for the GCC, the number of overnight stays by visitors from the GCC in Germany has seen a remarkable increase since 2022, reaching 1.2 million nights in 2025, which is a 9% rise from previous figures. In that same year, travellers from these nations collectively spent €3 billion, exceeding the average spending of foreign visitors by over 30% per trip.

Insights from the Arabian Travel Market

This information was shared during a press conference held at the opening of the Arabian Travel Market 2026, which takes place from 14 to 17 September 2026 at the Dubai World Trade Centre. Yamina Soufi, the Director of Marketing and Sales at the German National Tourist Office for the GCC, noted, “We have witnessed steady growth in visitor numbers from the GCC, alongside significant increases in tourism spending during the period from 2022 to 2025.”

Challenges and Future Prospects

Despite a promising start in January 2026, with a 4.7% rise in hotel stays amounting to 68,455 nights, subsequent months have seen a decline in GCC traveller overnight stays attributed to exceptional disruptions in air traffic across the Gulf. This situation impacted the flow of travelers and direct travel to Germany. Nevertheless, the figures continue to affirm Germany’s enduring appeal to tourists from the GCC, demonstrating resilience in demand from the region.

Enhancing Travel Experience

Munich Airport’s new terminal, which spans 95,000 square meters, is set to accommodate up to 6 million additional passengers and serve as a central hub in Munich for airlines operating from the region. In 2025, around 1.6 million passengers flew between Munich and the Gulf, accounting for 18% of the airport’s long-haul travel volume, connecting 15 airlines to 15 destinations across 10 countries in the Middle East.

New Initiatives for Arab Travellers

In conjunction with the terminal opening, the Bavarian Arab Association has launched a new office at Munich Airport, serving as a dedicated contact point for Arab travellers. This initiative aims to enhance cultural understanding and provide tailored support services for visitors.

Cultural and Sustainable Tourism Campaigns

Corina Born, Munich Airport’s International Media Relations Director, remarked, “In collaboration with the German National Tourist Office, Munich Airport remains committed to fostering communication, hospitality, and cultural ties between Germany and the Arab world, positioning Germany and Bavaria as a premier destination for family, leisure, wellness, and luxury travel.”

Promotional Campaigns for Future Travel

The campaigns for Germany in 2026 and 2027 will highlight the diversity of its tourism offerings, from sustainable travel and natural experiences to urban culture, culinary arts, and seasonal activities, alongside a busy schedule of cultural events and anniversaries. Featured campaigns include “Simply Experience the Feeling of Harmony,” which showcases sustainable tourism initiatives; “Your Next Stop: Travel Destination Germany,” celebrating the diversity of German cities; and “Delicious Germany,” focusing on regional cuisine and luxury dining experiences.

Exhibitions and Events in Germany

Cultural landmarks will also play a key role, with celebrations planned for the 150th anniversary of the Wagner Festival in Bayreuth, followed by the BTHVN 2027 exhibition commemorating Beethoven’s 200th death anniversary. The Documenta 16 in Kassel, one of the world’s most prominent contemporary art exhibitions, and the 2027 International Garden Exhibition (IGA) in the Ruhr area will further underscore Germany’s status as a year-round tourist destination.

Visit Germany at the Arabian Travel Market

Germany’s pavilion at the Arabian Travel Market 2026 will be located in the Europe Hall, stand EU5150. The event is an excellent opportunity for stakeholders to explore partnerships and showcase Germany as a diverse travel destination.
