Syria’s Stability: A Magnet for UAE Investments

During the official opening session of the Arab Media Summit 2026, President Ahmed Al-Shara of the Arab Republic of Syria addressed attendees in Dubai yesterday. The summit, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, was attended by prominent figures, including His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, second deputy ruler of Dubai; Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority; and Jassim Mohammed Al-Budaiwi, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council. The session gathered key ministers, officials, and media leaders from both the UAE and around the world.

Emphasising UAE-Syria Ties

In his remarks, President Al-Shara highlighted the deep, brotherly ties between the Emirati and Syrian peoples, referencing the sentiments shared by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. He noted that Syria is currently experiencing a transitional phase marked by the rebuilding of trust and institutions, despite the numerous challenges, including sanctions that have severely impacted the Syrian economy. He asserted that Syria is evolving into a significant opportunity for all, actively contributing to regional stability, international participation, and strategic security.

Investment Opportunities and Economic Growth

President Al-Shara pointed to the current stability as a key factor attracting investments, particularly from the UAE. He cited the investments by DP World in the Port of Tartus, which connects with Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port, as indicative of the growing opportunities Syria presents to both Arab and global investors. This development is particularly noteworthy given Syria’s strategic location that serves the region well for trade corridors. Ongoing discussions indicate a keen interest from Gulf and European investors in opportunities within Syria.

A New Economic Vision

In an interview led by journalist Ammar Taqi, President Al-Shara stated that Syria had been heavily sanctioned in the past but is now ready to embark on a path of economic rejuvenation, coinciding with recent historical decisions from the United States that have lifted some restrictions. He described this moment as a rebirth for Syria, allowing for a transition towards a free market economy that supports the private sector. Though some necessary decisions may be jarring, he expressed optimism about the eventual positive changes this transition will bring.

President Al-Shara elaborated on the evolution of the Syrian economy, revealing that it had plummeted to approximately $20 billion under the previous regime but is projected to rise to $32 billion by 2025 and potentially reach $50 billion by 2027. He expressed hope that, with sustained stability in the region and globally, the Syrian economy could achieve $200 billion within the next decade.

Food Security and Regional Stability

Additionally, he underscored Syria’s crucial role as a food security hub, stating that the country could feed between 70 and 75 million people due to its agricultural resources. With modern agricultural techniques, this capacity could exceed 100 million, positioning Syria as a vital contributor to regional food security.

Commitment to International Engagement

President Al-Shara affirmed Syria’s commitment to its international obligations, assuring that the nation communicates transparently about its capabilities and actions. He believes that Syria’s rich cultural heritage, skilled workforce, and historical expertise enable it to maintain an independent decision-making process with a reciprocal relationship with its Arab and Islamic neighbors. He stressed the importance of regional stability, stating that merely staying outside conflict zones is insufficient; sustainable security is essential for Syria’s development initiatives.

Addressing Challenges and Future Outlook

Despite the many challenges facing the country, President Al-Shara emphasised a continuous work policy focused on serving the Syrian people. He affirmed that the dignity, independence, and honour of every Syrian citizen are fundamental principles that will not be compromised, as the true wealth of Syria lies within its society.

The Role of Media in Shaping Narrative

Finally, he stressed the significance of ethical journalism, highlighting the media’s responsibility to ensure credibility and avoid political bias, especially in a region marred by conflicts. He called for the media to adapt to evolving realities and deliver facts accurately, which is essential for maintaining public trust.

Welcoming Remarks at the Summit

In her welcoming address, Mona Ghanem Al-Marri, Deputy President and Member of the Dubai Media Council, acknowledged the importance of the summit amid significant geopolitical and technological changes that impact the future of the region. Reflecting on the evolution of media over the past 25 years, she reaffirmed the vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to foster dialogue among media stakeholders, emphasising the role of the media in narrating the region’s story and shaping its future.

As the Arab Media Summit continues, discussions surrounding investment, regional stability, and the pivotal role of media remain at the forefront, paving the way for a collective vision that aims for a more stable and prosperous future for Syria and the broader region.
