UAE’s Resilient Trade Strategy: Navigating Through Crisis

On 7 September 2026, during the ongoing geopolitical turmoil in the region, Dr. Anwar Gargash, the Diplomatic Adviser to the President of the United Arab Emirates, reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to safeguarding its national security and economic stability. Speaking at the Helly Forum in Abu Dhabi, he asserted that the UAE’s energy exports and trade will not be held hostage to regional crises.

A Critical Transition: The Challenges Ahead

In his address on the evolving regional landscape, Gargash highlighted that the region is currently at a pivotal stage, reconfiguring its geopolitical and political contours. He underscored the complexity of the present crisis, which demands the highest levels of readiness and self-reliance.

Strategic Independence: A National Imperative

Gargash pointed out that the UAE has made significant efforts to avoid reaching this critical juncture, repeatedly warning of the long-term consequences of such actions. He referenced lessons learned from past conflicts, notably the 2003 Iraq War, emphasising that wars do not conclude with the cessation of fighting but leave enduring political and security repercussions that can persist for decades.

He argued that “strategic independence” has become an essential national option, demonstrating its effectiveness in maintaining economic growth, protecting the populace’s security, and preserving the independence of national decision-making amidst a region marked by uncertainty.

Proactive Measures to Ensure Trade and Supply Chains

In response to the ongoing crisis, Gargash announced a swift plan to secure maritime supply lines and trade. This initiative includes expanding port capacities along the eastern coastline of the UAE and enhancing logistical connectivity by developing pipelines and rail networks to link vital ports. Additionally, the plan involves the opening and development of alternative trade routes for goods transportation.

Concluding his speech, Dr. Gargash cautioned against complacency in the face of threats. He asserted that the UAE will adopt a forward-thinking approach and respond adeptly to build resilience within its infrastructure and economy, relying on well-prepared strategies to handle various scenarios effectively.
