Student Creates Affordable Aerodynamics Testing Device

In a groundbreaking development, Kevin Amambo, a student from Middlesex University Dubai, has created an innovative engineering project named “Aero-Scanner.” This device aims to provide a cost-effective solution for testing aerodynamic performance, particularly for students and researchers.

Addressing the Challenges of Aerodynamics Testing

The Aero-Scanner comes as a practical response to the soaring costs associated with professional wind tunnels, which can run into millions of dollars. Amambo’s invention seeks to bridge the gap between computational simulations and actual wind tunnel tests, offering accessible tools at a reasonable price for emerging engineers and students.

Innovation Through IoT Technology

The device relies on a compact unit that employs Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to directly measure factors such as lift force, drag force, and airspeed. Additionally, it enables control over the vehicle’s rear wing through four different settings that simulate diverse movement conditions, including the impact of drag reduction systems. This feature allows users to experiment with aerodynamic configurations effectively.

Future Developments and Educational Access

Looking ahead, Amambo plans to enhance the sensor system to directly measure air density by incorporating sensors for atmospheric pressure, temperature, and humidity. His vision is to develop the Aero-Scanner into an open-source educational platform, allowing universities and students worldwide to study and test aerodynamics at a fraction of the traditional cost.
