Emirati Champion Fatima Al Awadhi Conquers 7,000-Meter Heights

In a groundbreaking achievement for the UAE, 19-year-old climber Fatima Abdul Rahman Al Awadhi has made history by becoming the youngest Arab to summit a peak exceeding 7,000 metres. On July 18th, she reached the summit of Lenin Peak, standing at 7,134 metres in the Pamir Mountains of Kyrgyzstan. This remarkable feat also marks her as the first Emirati to conquer this challenging mountain.

Climbing Journey and Ambitions

Fatima’s ascent of Lenin Peak is her highest achievement to date and an important milestone in her quest to complete the Seven Summits challenge and the Explorers Grand Slam. Her accomplishments have established her as one of the foremost young talents in mountain climbing within the region.

Renowned for its extreme weather conditions and rugged icy terrain, Lenin Peak presents significant challenges for climbers, especially at altitudes above 7,000 metres. Fatima’s journey lasted approximately three weeks and consisted of two main phases: an acclimatization period followed by the final push to the summit. Impressively, she reached the peak without the use of supplemental oxygen.

A Series of Firsts

Fatima’s achievement adds to her impressive climbing resume. Notably, she is the youngest Emirati to summit Mount Elbrus (5,642 metres), Europe’s highest peak, and also the youngest Arab to reach the summits of Mount Vinson in Antarctica and Puncak Jaya (Carstensz Pyramid) in Oceania. Additionally, she has successfully climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain. At the summit of Lenin, Fatima proudly raised the UAE flag, marking a historic moment for the nation.

Messages of Inspiration

At the summit, Fatima also unveiled a message from His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, directed towards the youth of the world. In his message, Sheikh Mohamed emphasised the values of ambition, hope, resilience, and perseverance.

Fatima dedicated her accomplishment to Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed in appreciation of his unwavering support for the nation’s youth. She also offered a tribute to Her Highness Sheikh Fatima bint Mubarak, ‘Mother of the UAE’, recognising the leadership’s role in empowering Emirati women and encouraging their pursuit of excellence.

Reflections on Achievement

Reflecting on her experience, Fatima stated, “Standing on the summit of Lenin and raising the flag of my beloved UAE was not merely the end of a climb; it served as a reminder of why I embarked on this journey.” She underscored that mountain climbing has taught her that the greatest rewards often come from confronting challenges.

Expressing gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, she acknowledged his constant support and commitment to fostering youth potential, encouraging them to dream bigger and work diligently towards their goals. Fatima hopes her achievement will inspire the youth of the UAE to believe in their capabilities and have the determination to pursue their ambitions.

A Balance Between Academia and Ambition

Fatima is currently a recipient of a scholarship from the Presidential Court for her university studies, as well as the Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Scholars Programme for high-achieving students. She skillfully balances her full-time university education with her aspirations in elite mountain climbing, serving as a prime example of how to harmonise academic success with athletic ambitions.
