Today, all eyes are on the historic Goodwood Racecourse in the UK as the prestigious Glorious Goodwood Festival kicks off, running until Saturday. This year’s event features a remarkable 38 races, showcasing some of the finest thoroughbreds in international turf racing.
Highlighting the Opening Day
The opening day of the festival includes eight races, with two dedicated to Group 2 horses and one to the elite Group 1 category. This top-tier race is part of the British Champions Series, alongside four handicaps and a race for novice horses.
Strong Representation from the UAE
The 2026 edition of the festival sees a robust presence from Emirati horses over its five days. Notably, the first day will feature 16 horses owned by Emirati owners. Among the highlights are “Trullerman,” carrying the Godolphin silks, and “Rahiib,” owned by His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Both will compete for glory in the fourth and main event, the “Goodwood Cup,” a Group 1 race spanning 3,200 meters on turf.
Trullerman’s Quest for Redemption
Trullerman, trained by the renowned John and Thady Gosden, is set to contest the main race, aiming to avenge a recent defeat to the leading contender, the Irish horse “Scandinavia,” trained by the esteemed Aidan O’Brien. Last month, Trullerman finished a close second, just a head behind Scandinavia at the Gold Cup at Ascot, elevating the stakes for their upcoming showdown.
Rahiib’s Pursuit of Redemption
Rahiib, under the expert training of Roger Varian, is eager to challenge both Trullerman and Scandinavia. The four-year-old horse is looking to make an impressive return to Group 1 racing after finishing eighth in last month’s Gold Cup. Following a reduction in distance, Rahiib seeks to deliver a strong performance and reclaim his competitive stature.
As the Glorious Goodwood Festival unfolds, the excitement surrounding these distinguished competitors promises to enhance the rich tradition of racing at Goodwood. Fans and enthusiasts alike will be watching closely as the drama unfolds on this illustrious stage.
