Trade and Energy Supply Disruptions Demand Urgent Attention

In today’s global landscape, the statement that disrupting trade and energy supplies is unacceptable holds immense significance. Recent developments emphasize the necessity of maintaining freedom of navigation, particularly in crucial waterways like the Strait of Hormuz. The United Arab Emirates has reiterated its sovereignty over its three occupied islands and has called for Iran to end its occupation through peaceful negotiations. This article discusses the UAE’s strong stance on ensuring safe maritime practices and the broader implications of disrupting trade and energy supplies.

Emphasizing Maritime Security

The United Arab Emirates has underscored the importance of safe and free navigation in international waters, specifically within the context of the Strait of Hormuz. “Any threat to commercial navigation, or attempt to disrupt trade and energy supplies through vital sea routes is unacceptable,” stated Abdullah Saeed Al-Ajili during a recent meeting of UN Convention on the Law of the Sea participants. The UAE emphasizes the need for adherence to international law, reflecting principles embedded within customary international law.

Concerns Over Regional Stability

The UAE has expressed serious concerns regarding threats to maritime safety in the Gulf Arab region. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical lifeline for international trade and energy markets, making it a focal point for global economic stability. In light of recent agreements between the United States and Iran, the UAE has urged prioritization of diplomatic dialogue and adherence to international law to bolster regional security while ensuring the uninterrupted flow of navigation through these essential waterways.

Condemning Iranian Threats

The UAE’s statement firmly condemned the destabilizing actions carried out by Iran, which jeopardize civilian lives, infrastructure, and the safety of maritime enterprises. This behavior, which poses a risk to the essential flow of trade, must be “rejected decisively,” the statement said. The UAE stressed that vital sea routes should never be used as tools of coercion or political escalation, reaffirming the principle that disrupting trade and energy supplies is incompatible with a stable global economy.

UAE’s Sovereignty and Diplomatic Appeal

Furthermore, the UAE reaffirmed its sovereignty over the three islands—Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa—and urged Iran to end its occupation. The UAE advocates for resolving this dispute through peaceful negotiations or by taking the matter to the International Court of Justice, consistent with established international law. “Ensuring the safety and security of navigation in international waterways is a shared responsibility and essential for peace and sustainable development globally,” the UAE concluded, reaffirming its commitment to enhancing maritime security in collaboration with international partners.
