In a recent celebration hosted by the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Portuguese Ambassador to the UAE, Fernando Figueira, highlighted the remarkable efforts of Sharjah’s ruler in fostering cultural exchange. This gathering reflected the strong ties between Sharjah and Portugal, emphasizing their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation in various fields, particularly cultural and business interactions.
Cultural Connections Take Center Stage
During his discussion with “Sharjah 24,” Ambassador Fernando Figueira praised the exceptional relationship between Sharjah and Portugal, which spans numerous domains. He specifically noted the profound cultural and civilizational ties that give this relationship its unique character. Figueira emphasized the personal dedication of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, in promoting cultural and educational exchanges between the two countries.
He stated, “The relations between Portugal and Sharjah are a model of cooperation rooted in mutual respect and genuine closeness.” Additionally, he acknowledged that the role Sharjah plays in enhancing intercultural dialogue and fostering understanding between nations is something Portugal values greatly. As he put it, “Portugal knows Sharjah well, and Sharjah knows Portugal. We must optimize this relationship.”
Strengthening Economic Ties
Figueira detailed the constructive commercial landscape, emphasizing key figures that illustrate this burgeoning partnership. Currently, around 1,200 Portuguese companies export to the UAE, with nearly fifty of them operating within the country. Over the past two to three years, Portugal’s exports to the UAE have surged by 25% annually. This growth reflects the genuine ambition from both sides to deepen their business collaborations, as Portugal actively participates in significant regional exhibitions to boost its economic presence in the UAE.
The Cultural Dimension: More Than Just Numbers
The ambassador also underscored that cultural exchange is as crucial as economic collaboration, if not more so. He highlighted Portugal’s participation as a guest of honor at the Sharjah International Book Fair, an invitation extended personally by Sharjah’s ruler. Figueira regarded this moment as pivotal, revealing the essence of their relationship more profoundly than any official document could capture.
In closing, Figueira affirmed, “Our relationship is solid, deep, and historical. We are committed to preserving and enhancing it, both today and in the future.” This commitment underlines the ongoing dedication of both nations to strengthen their cultural and economic ties, fostering a partnership that is destined to thrive.
