Gradual Increase in Temperatures Across Most Areas of the Country in May
The month of May witnesses a gradual increase in temperatures, marking one of the transitional periods as the weather shifts from winter to summer. Accompanying this change is the northward movement of the sun, leading to longer daylight hours and a steady rise in temperatures across most areas of the country. In this article, we explore the climatic characteristics of May and their impact on weather conditions.
Climatic Characteristics of May
The National Center of Meteorology reviewed the general climatic characteristics of May, noting that it serves as a transitional period between winter and summer. During this month, the effects of the Siberian high-pressure system weaken, while the influence of low-pressure systems from the west or east increases. When these two types of low-pressure systems meet, cloud formation may occur, creating opportunities for rainfall in some areas, which enhances the variability of weather conditions.
Changes in Humidity and Fog
The center indicated that the humidity level in the air experiences a relative decrease compared to April, especially during the second half of May. However, conditions remain favorable for the formation of fog and light fog, particularly in the first half of the month. This decline in fog frequency may contribute to stable weather conditions, but it is advisable for residents to remain alert for sudden changes.
Climate Statistics for Temperature Records
The average temperatures during May range from 30.6 to 33.6 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperatures range from 37.3 to 40.9 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperatures vary between 24.3 and 26.8 degrees Celsius. The highest recorded temperature in May was 51.6 degrees Celsius in the Suwaihan area in 2025, while the lowest temperature was recorded on Jebel Jais in 2005 at 9 degrees Celsius.
Wind Speed and Relative Humidity
The average wind speed during the month was 13 kilometers per hour, with the highest recorded wind speed at Jebel Mebreh in 2010, reaching 117.2 kilometers per hour. In terms of relative humidity, the average for May was 39%, with maximum relative humidity ranging from 54% to 82%, and minimum relative humidity ranging from 14% to 24%.
In terms of fog, the year 2021 recorded the highest frequency of fog occurrence in May, with 10 days of fog and 4 days of light fog. The highest amount of rainfall recorded during this month was 134.4 mm in the Al-Fili area of Sharjah Emirate in 1981. Weather conditions continue to change, necessitating ongoing monitoring of weather patterns throughout this month.
