Today marks a significant turning point in environmental policies as the ban on plastic tableware comes into effect, implementing the second phase of Ministerial Decision No. (380) of 2022. This new legislation restricts the import, production, and circulation of single-use plastic products, including various disposable items. The move aims to reduce plastic waste and promote sustainable alternatives, emphasizing the government’s commitment to environmental protection.
Details of the Ban
Beginning today, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has outlined the specific items that fall under the ban on plastic tableware. The prohibition encompasses not only cups and their lids but also cutlery such as forks, knives, spoons, chopsticks, plates, straws, and stirrers. Moreover, containers and food boxes made from styrofoam are included in this comprehensive ban on single-use plastic items, regardless of their material composition, including paper products thinner than 50 microns.
Exceptions to the Policy
To facilitate smooth commercial operations and support the industrial sector, the ministry has provided specific exceptions to this ban on plastic tableware. Notably, products designated for export will still be permitted, provided they are clearly marked to indicate their intended market. Additionally, single-use bags manufactured from recycled materials within the country are also exempted, encouraging local recycling initiatives. Other exceptions include medical bags, trash bags, and thin wraps used for preserving fresh foods like meats, vegetables, and bread, as well as large shopping bags designed for clothing, electronics, and toys.
Call for Compliance
The Ministry urges all establishments, marketplaces, and suppliers to fully adhere to the stipulations of the ban on plastic tableware. This collective effort will play a crucial role in achieving the nation’s environmental objectives. Engineer Alia Abdulrahim Al-Hurmudi, the assistant undersecretary for sustainable communities at the Ministry, stated, “The activation of this decision represents a pivotal moment in the country’s journey toward building a more sustainable future.”
As this ban on plastic tableware takes effect, it marks a progressive step towards reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainable practices across various sectors. The support from both manufacturers and consumers will be integral in ensuring the success of this initiative.
