Dubai Airport Becomes Most Costly Stranding Location in the Middle East

According to a recent report, Dubai has emerged as the most expensive airport in the Middle East for stranded travelers, while Doha’s Hamad International Airport holds the title of the cheapest. This finding highlights the stark differences in travel costs across major airports in the region, revealing how economic factors shape the expenses incurred during unplanned layovers. With Dubai’s premium facilities attracting a high volume of international traffic, the financial implications for passengers can be significant.

Cost Analysis of Middle East Airports

The study analyzed expenses at key global and regional airports, determining that Doha’s Hamad International Airport is the most economical in the Middle East, with costs averaging AED256. Following closely is Cairo International Airport at AED261.70, and Istanbul at AED329.05. This analysis reveals how disparities in living costs and local economies contribute to the overall travel experience.

Dubai’s High Costs vs. Regional Averages

Dubai ranks notably high globally, placing ninth among the most expensive airports for stranded passengers. This position is significant for an airport that saw a historic influx of 92.3 million travelers in 2024, making it the busiest for international flights worldwide. “We estimate that up to 29 million passengers worldwide in 2024 had to spend at least one night stranded at or near an airport,” remarked Anton Radchenko, CEO of AirAdvisor. The contrasting costs at Dubai compared to Doha, a difference of AED228.55, highlight the economic realities impacting stranded travelers.

Comparative Costs: Hotel and Food

Doha’s Hamad International Airport, serving as the hub for Qatar Airways, provides three-star hotel accommodations at an average price of AED184. In contrast, similar establishments near Dubai International Airport often exceed AED350 per night. Furthermore, fast food meals at DXB typically range from AED45 to AED55, while travelers at Hamad can find similar meals priced at AED30 to AED35, emphasizing the cost advantages for those stranded in Doha.

Global Context of Airport Costs

Globally, Dubai’s AED484.55 cost places it slightly behind major Western hubs but ahead of Hong Kong’s AED477.75. Notably, New York’s JFK Airport is the most expensive globally, with stranded passengers facing a staggering AED1,191.05 in related expenses. “Airports operate in a unique environment where both businesses and travelers have limited flexibility,” explained Radchenko, highlighting the challenges faced by passengers at high-cost airports. Meanwhile, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport stands out as the most affordable worldwide at just AED91.50, showcasing how economic conditions can vary dramatically between regions.

Given the diverse pricing structures across these airports, it’s vital for travelers to remain aware of their rights and potential compensations during disruptions. Radchenko advised that knowing entitlements and carrying essential items can help mitigate unexpected expenses. By understanding the landscape of airport costs, travelers can make more informed choices and avoid becoming overwhelmed by expenses during unexpected layovers.
