Global Steel Conference Attracts 1400 Delegates Worldwide

The Middle East Iron and Steel Conference has commenced in Dubai, showcasing a significant turnout with 1,400 participants from 55 countries. This event brings together industry experts and specialists dedicated to iron and steel production, emphasizing the growing importance of these materials in the region. With discussions centered around innovation, sustainability, and global market challenges, the conference is poised to shape the future of the iron and steel industry in the Middle East.

Emphasizing Growth Amidst Challenges

During the opening speech, Engineer Said Ghumran Al-Rumaithi, CEO of Emsteel, highlighted the United Arab Emirates’ strong performance in the global iron and steel markets. He noted an anticipated growth in demand of approximately 7%, driven by a notable increase in rebar consumption. However, Al-Rumaithi pointed out significant challenges, including global oversupply, rising imports, and unfair trading practices. These factors compel local manufacturing companies to consistently lead in quality, innovation, and responsible production to maintain competitiveness amidst rapid global changes.

Innovative Approaches to Production

“At Emsteel, we are committed to facilitating this transformation by integrating clean energy, enhancing efficiency, and adopting advanced technologies,” Al-Rumaithi stated. He discussed the measurable sustainability standards outlined in their sustainable steel program, aiming to optimize supply chains, expedite emission reduction, and expand regional partnerships. This proactive stance is designed to convert current challenges into opportunities, fostering the development of the iron and steel sector and its future in the UAE.

Addressing the Global Oversupply

Sharjeel Azhar, CEO of Ittifaq Steel, addressed the pressing issue of global oversupply, estimating it at between 500 and 600 million tons. This surplus is reshaping trade flows and significantly altering market exposure. Azhar suggested that while protective measures might offer temporary stability, the industry’s long-term competitiveness will rely on companies’ ability to innovate, adopt advanced technologies, and transition to low-carbon steel production on a large scale.

Collaborative Efforts and New Agreements

The first day of the conference featured intense discussions on the transformative shifts redefining the iron and steel sector, including changes in trade routes and the expedited movement towards low-carbon production. Notably, the day concluded with a strong emphasis on the growing global necessity for low-carbon output. Emsteel made significant strides, signing three new agreements and memorandums of understanding with international partners. The first agreement, valued at 135 million Dirhams, involves collaboration with PrimeTals Technologies for the installation of a new wire rod production line in Abu Dhabi. The second agreement with Picard aims to foster cooperation in developing low-emission wire manufacturing. The third agreement was made with the Suez Canal Investment Company to supply essential sheet products for major infrastructure projects in the Suez Canal region.
