New Study: 7 Out of 10 in the UAE Demand Ethical Awareness When Using Artificial Intelligence

A new study conducted by De Montfort University Dubai reveals that 7 out of 10 residents in the UAE consider ethical awareness when using artificial intelligence to be essential. These findings reflect the growing concern about how this technology is evolving and its impact on our communities. This comes at a time when the adoption of AI technologies is accelerating across various sectors, placing greater responsibility on individuals and institutions to promote ethical standards and awareness when engaging with this technology.

Enhancing Awareness and Education

More than 60% of survey participants indicated that they use tools such as “ChatGPT,” “Gemini,” or “Copilot” for learning and problem-solving purposes. Furthermore, 72% emphasized the need to enhance awareness and education regarding the ethical use of AI technologies. While 59% of the population feels confident entering the job market after graduation, this figure drops to 44% among young people aged 18 to 24, highlighting the importance of strengthening the role of education in preparing graduates for the changing market demands.

Easier but with Concerns

The research showed that 67% of participants believe AI tools make their daily lives easier. However, 47% expressed concern that over-reliance on these technologies could negatively affect learning and critical thinking skills. According to the data, the relationship between UAE residents and AI goes beyond mere curiosity, becoming more interactive with a focus on human values. Additionally, 56% of participants noted that their university experience provided them with skills that remain valuable even outside their areas of specialization.

Confidence in Entering the Job Market

While the survey results indicated that 44% of young people feel confident entering the job market, De Montfort University Dubai aims to address this gap by offering an innovative educational model known as the “Block Teaching System.” 52% of participants supported this model, considering it to make education more effective than studying multiple subjects concurrently.

Employing the Power of AI Responsibly

Professor Shushma Patel, Senior Vice President of the AI Department in the UK, stated that this study underscores the importance of universities advocating for the responsible use of AI. She added, “As various sectors accelerate towards harnessing the potential of AI, it is crucial for universities to remain at the forefront of this transition.”

Simon Bradbury, the university’s International Vice President, confirmed that the goal is to develop students’ skills to meet the changing job market needs. He added, “Our new model allows students to focus on one subject, enhancing their experience in using AI as an effective tool” while also developing creativity and critical thinking skills, which algorithms cannot replicate.

De Montfort University Dubai continues to emphasize the necessity of ethical awareness in AI usage, contributing to the preparation of a generation of graduates capable of effectively addressing future challenges. Through this approach, awareness of the challenges and opportunities associated with AI use is enhanced, fostering the ethical values needed for sustainable development.
