Dubai Enhances Urban Mobility with Six New Pedestrian Bike Bridges

Dubai Roads Implements 6 Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridges on Major Streets

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai continues its efforts to enhance infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists with the development of six new pedestrian and bicycle bridges across several key streets in the emirate. This project is part of the RTA’s strategy to improve road safety and provide a safe and sustainable transportation environment, aligning with Dubai’s vision to reshape how residents interact with the city’s streets.

Completion of New Bridges

The RTA has completed two pedestrian bridges on Sheikh Rashid and Port Streets as part of the Shindagha Corridor Development Project. The six bridges currently under construction will enhance connectivity in vital areas of the emirate. Five of these bridges are expected to open before the end of the year, while the sixth is anticipated to be inaugurated in the first quarter of 2027. The RTA also plans to construct an additional 23 bridges by the end of 2030.

Commitment to Road Safety

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the RTA’s Board of Executive Directors, emphasized that the implementation of pedestrian and bicycle bridges is part of the leadership’s directives to enhance road safety and improve the quality of life. He noted that the number of pedestrian bridges and tunnels has increased from 26 in 2006 to 177 in 2024, reflecting a staggering increase of 581%. The RTA will also rely on field studies focused on population density and the integration of tourist attractions and transport stations in the implementation of the new bridges.

Impact of Infrastructure Development

The RTA’s efforts have significantly contributed to reducing traffic accident rates; pedestrian fatalities decreased from 9.5 per 100,000 people in 2007 to 0.3 fatalities in 2024, representing a 97% reduction. The satisfaction rate among pedestrians in the emirate has risen to 88%, while the number of pedestrian trips increased from 307 million in 2023 to 326 million in 2024, marking a 6% increase. Bicycle trips are also on the rise, increasing from 44 million in 2023 to 46.6 million in 2024.

Details of Ongoing Projects

The two new bridges on Sheikh Rashid and Port Streets include elevators and stairs, as well as a room for electromechanical systems. The remaining bridges aim to connect key landmarks such as Dubai Internet City and Al Barsha. The unique design of the bridges, inspired by the surrounding environment, helps provide high visual and aesthetic standards. The RTA also seeks to integrate modern systems to ensure the advancement of technology and unique architectural design.

With all these projects, the RTA in Dubai reaffirms its commitment to achieving the vision of Dubai as a pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly city, contributing to improved comfort and quality of life for its residents and visitors. Providing pedestrian and bicycle bridges is an essential part of sustainable transportation strategies aimed at reducing accidents and ensuring everyone’s safety.
