Fifteen Proven Strategies to Enhance School Traffic Safety

In the quest to enhance road safety for school students, the Ministry of Interior has outlined 15 key measures that must be adopted by students, parents, and school bus drivers. These guidelines not only aim to improve traffic safety on the roads but also ensure a secure start to the new academic year. By following these critical steps, the initiative promotes an environment where everyone can travel safely, reinforcing the importance of traffic safety awareness.

Guidelines for Students

The Ministry of Interior emphasized four essential measures for students to ensure their safety during school commutes. First, students must wait until the road is clear of vehicles before crossing in a straight line. Second, adhering to safety instructions while seated on the bus is paramount. Third, students should only disembark from the bus after it has come to a complete stop. Lastly, students should consistently follow safety instructions taught at both school and home.

Expectations for Parents

Parents are encouraged to adopt six significant practices to safeguard their children. These include planning the school trip in advance and ensuring the road is safe for travel. Teaching children the rules of road safety and revisiting them regularly is essential. Parents should also ensure that students cross roads safely and maintain clear communication with schools regarding their traffic management plans. Active participation in traffic awareness campaigns can elevate community understanding of road safety, and collaboration with government entities and schools is vital to guarantee students’ safety.

School Bus Drivers’ Responsibilities

The Ministry outlined five critical procedures specifically for school bus drivers. First, drivers must remain focused solely on the road, avoiding distractions. Adhering to speed limits, especially in school zones, is of utmost importance. Furthermore, leaving a safe following distance from the vehicles ahead and coming to a complete stop when boarding and disembarking students are essential practices. Lastly, caution must be exercised when reversing the bus or exiting parking spaces.

Community Initiatives and Benefits

This school year sees the Ministry of Interior, in conjunction with the Federal Traffic Council, launching a comprehensive road safety campaign titled “Day Without Accidents.” This initiative began on the first day of the academic year and underscores the importance of maintaining smooth traffic flow and protecting all road users. Alongside this, the Ministry’s Child Protection Center is conducting a subsidiary campaign focused on raising awareness about children’s safety through various informative events in partnership with relevant authorities.

Drivers who comply with traffic laws during the “Day Without Accidents” initiative can earn a reduction of four black points from their driving records. Compliance involves committing to six essential actions, including maintaining a safe distance between vehicles, prioritizing pedestrians at crossings, wearing seatbelts while driving, sticking to speed limits, refraining from using phones while driving, and yielding to emergency vehicles and official convoys. This community-driven initiative aims to preserve road safety and foster a shared understanding of the importance of traffic awareness.
