The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has successfully completed 90% of the construction of a 1,500-meter bridge featuring two lanes in each direction. This bridge will provide direct access between Sheikh Zayed Road and the Dubai Harbor area, a modern hub for marine and tourist activities in the emirate, known for housing the largest yacht marina in the Middle East. The project reflects the RTA’s continuous efforts to advance infrastructure that enhances road network efficiency and aligns with Dubai’s rapid urban and tourism growth, facilitating smoother traffic flow and improving connectivity with essential development projects and major attractions.
Project Overview
The bridge project is a significant undertaking, involving 1,400 engineers and workers organized into 12 teams. To date, the total work hours have exceeded four million, with high safety standards maintained throughout the process. More than 45,000 cubic meters of concrete and 8,273 tons of steel have been used in developing this key infrastructure.
Expected Opening Dates
According to the project timeline, traffic is set to commence on the bridge for drivers coming from Sheikh Zayed Road towards Dubai Harbor in June. Additionally, in July, there will be an opening for inbound traffic from Dubai Harbor to Al Naseem Road, along with access to the intersection of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street and Al Naseem Road.
Capacity and Traffic Improvements
Matar Al Tayer, the RTA Director General and Chairman of the Board, announced that the bridge demonstrates rapid progress, with a total capacity of 6,000 vehicles per hour in both directions. The project also involves surface improvement works at four major intersections along the bridge’s route, further enhancing traffic flow and connectivity with the area.
Impact on Commute Times
Upon completion, the bridge is expected to significantly reduce travel time from 12 minutes to just three minutes, improving traffic flow to and from Dubai Harbor and its surrounding areas.
Notably, Dubai Harbor is strategically located between Bluewaters Island and Palm Jumeirah, in close proximity to iconic landmarks like the Burj Al Arab. It encompasses a variety of living, shopping, and entertainment options, with ongoing development plans including a 1.5-kilometer expansion featuring a residential complex with 24 towers and approximately 7,500 residential units.
