Abu Dhabi Shuts Down 69 Food Outlets Over Safety Issues

In a significant move to ensure food safety, Abu Dhabi has closed a total of 69 food establishments over the past 18 months. This action, taken by the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, has primarily been driven by serious violations affecting food safety, including the presence of pests and the sale of expired products. These measures underline the commitment to maintaining high standards in food safety across the emirate.

Overview of Closure Statistics

The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority has reported that 55 food establishments were shut down last year, with an additional 14 closures occurring this year to date. These closures are the result of severe breaches in food safety regulations, compounded by a lack of compliance from the affected establishments despite repeated warnings from the authority.

Health Violations and Consumer Complaints

Key violations observed included the presence of insects in food preparation areas and the sale of expired food items. In related developments, the authority received a total of 7,154 consumer complaints during the past year and the first four months of the current year. This figure includes 5,514 complaints from last year and 1,640 from 2023 up to April 30.

Regulatory Oversight Mechanisms

According to a recent interview with the authority, food establishment inspections in Abu Dhabi are conducted through a comprehensive regulatory framework. This framework assesses the degree of risk posed by different food activities and emphasizes compliance with health standards and regulations. The authority carries out periodic and surprise inspections to ensure food safety at every stage—from receiving and storing to preparing and serving food.

Public Transparency and Consumer Health

In response to concerns regarding the publication of names and images of the establishments shut down, the authority emphasized that transparency is a priority. Sharing this information is intended to protect public health, not to tarnish the reputation of these businesses. Closure announcements are made exclusively in cases that could potentially endanger consumer safety, thereby enhancing public trust in the regulatory system.

Furthermore, the authority has clarified that a business may only reopen after all violations have been addressed and strict adherence to safety regulations is verified. Among the most recurrent violations observed during food inspections are the lack of mandatory training for personnel, unhygienic conditions, and improper storage of perishable items.

The authority follows a structured approach to dealing with violations, adjusting administrative sanctions based on the severity of each infraction. These actions range from warnings and fines to temporary suspensions and administrative closures, ensuring that establishments rectify issues before resuming operations.

As part of its commitment to maintaining food safety, the authority has launched the “Zadna Assessment” program, which includes a visibly displayed compliance sticker on food establishments, reflecting the results of inspections. This initiative aims to promote transparency and encourage adherence to food safety standards, reinforcing consumer confidence in the marketplace.

The continuous monitoring and enforcement of food safety regulations demonstrate the authority’s dedication to protecting public health and aligning with global best practices in food safety management.
