15 Groundbreaking UAE Studies Revolutionizing Multiple Sclerosis Treatment

The National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society has announced funding for 15 research studies since 2023, aimed at enhancing the understanding of the disease, as well as developing improved diagnostic and treatment methods. The overarching goal of these initiatives is to significantly improve the quality of life for individuals living with MS. The projects encompass a wide range of topics, from investigating genetic factors associated with MS in the UAE to developing smart sensors for monitoring mobility changes, incorporating augmented reality into rehabilitation, and utilising artificial intelligence for early diagnosis and treatment prediction.

Diverse Research Initiatives and Funding

Yasmin Metwally, Director of Research and Advocacy at the National MS Society, confirmed that these studies represent an investment of approximately AED 11 million, with plans to continue until 2025. The research covers varied fields, including genetic studies among local populations, wearable sensors for gait analysis, augmented reality in rehabilitation, and AI applications in MRI image analysis. In tandem with these research efforts, the society has also published national treatment guidelines for MS, which have been endorsed by the Abu Dhabi Department of Health, with aspirations to extend their adoption across other emirates to standardise care and ensure timely and appropriate treatment for all patients.

Advancements in Understanding Genetic Factors

Dr. Halima Alnaqbi, an assistant professor in biomedical engineering at Khalifa University, is leading a study exploring the genetic and hereditary associations in familial MS cases. This research aims to elucidate the genetic factors that may contribute to an individual’s susceptibility and severity of MS. “Focusing on familial cases allows us to compare individuals with MS to healthy relatives, which can help identify genetic variations linked to increased risk as well as protective factors,” she explained. The findings could ultimately inform preventive interventions and improve early diagnosis and treatment approaches.

Smart Sensors for Enhanced Mobility Monitoring

Dr. Charalampos Fitsalidis, an assistant professor in the physics department at Khalifa University, is developing self-generating energy sensors to better monitor MS progression through mobility assessment. The SENSE-MS project involves creating wearable sensors that integrate into everyday items like wristbands and shoes. “Our innovative approach combines non-invasive sensing with lightweight, flexible materials that adapt to body movements,” he elaborated. These sensors convert mechanical energy from movement into electrical signals, which can be recorded and analysed to track changes over time.

Augmented Reality in Rehabilitation

Dr. Ilham Alsharhan, an associate professor of physical therapy and neuro-rehabilitation at the University of Sharjah, is spearheading research on dual-task training using augmented reality to enhance cognitive and motor skills in MS patients. “In daily life, we seldom perform physical tasks without mental involvement, and for some MS patients, combining these can be challenging and affect their balance and mobility,” she noted. Her study employs augmented reality to simulate real-life scenarios, providing immediate feedback and adjusting the level of challenge based on the user’s performance.

Artificial Intelligence for Early Diagnosis and Treatment Prediction

Dr. Mohamed Yaqoob, an assistant professor in computer vision at Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, is working on leveraging AI algorithms to analyse patient data, including MRI images and clinical history, for timely diagnosis and predictions about MS progression. Initial results show the development of an imaging classification tool capable of distinguishing between normal and abnormal MRI scans. In parallel, Dr. Omar Alkhunbashi from Mohammed bin Rashid University is exploring AI’s potential in predicting treatment responses by integrating clinical, imaging, and genetic data to refine therapeutic strategies tailored to individual patients.

Continuing Commitment to Transformative Research

The National MS Society remains dedicated to supporting transformative research aimed at developing sustainable solutions for those affected by MS. By investing in scientific studies and fostering collaboration among research institutions, the society aims to enrich the UAE’s burgeoning scientific landscape, which is growing at three times the global rate. It seeks to further empower local researchers by funding post-doctoral fellowships for Emirati candidates in collaboration with the MENACTRIMS fellowship program, ensuring that UAE researchers are active participants in addressing the challenges of MS both regionally and globally.
